May Oliver uses imagery to show the relationship of the tree and the family by describing how it “will churn down its dark boughs, smashing the house”. (7-8)This description of the house being destroyed shows how they viewed the tree at the beginning of the poem. However, this is also when they are only thinking about the money.

Later in the poem, the mood towards the tree changes by having the speaker realize that they would “crawl with shame in emptiness we’d made in our own and our father’s backyard.”(27-29) This demonstrates the grief that they would go through if they lost a piece of their family history.
