Air pollution is a major issue in many places around the world. As cities become more industrialized, air pollution becomes a more important issue. Long-term exposure to air pollution is correlated with lung cancer and other negative health conditions (Pope et al., 2002). The issue is not something new. In past decades, societies struggled with polluted air whenever different methods of transportation and power were invented. Industrial cities in Britain during the 19th century were mainly polluted as a result of coal-powered steam engines. Trains and ships were powered by engines that burned coal. As a result of rapid increases in trade, some areas in Britain had an excessive buildup of air pollution. Coal-powered steam engines were constantly emitting pollution into the air. The result was that many people either died or suffered from negative health consequences as a result of the pollution. In Linfen, there are similarities and differences. Linfen is considered to be one of the top ten most polluted places on the planet. While an increase in trade was the main cause for air pollution in Britain, coal mining is a major source of air pollution in Linfen. Many different coal mines are scattered throughout different parts of Linfen. In addition, other sources of pollution also exist. The city has a large population, and so a major source of emissions are automobiles. There are also many industrial factories in Linfen. The emissions from both factories and automobiles contribute to the problem.
The problem of air pollution is not something that can easily be solved. Things like electric cars and solar panels are allowing people to power their cars and factories without producing as much pollution in the air. However, some alternative energy technologies are still in their early stages. As such, they can be costly to purchase and implement. If cities want to improve the quality of air over the long run, it is necessary for them to create incentives that encourage people to switch over from using forms of energy that have a negative impact on air quality.
