Imagine being forced to do something you haven’t done before seemingly impossible; well that’s exactly how students that are pushed to another grade without having sufficient knowledge of a material may feel. Repeating a course is the process whereby a student that earned a low letter grade is able to retake that certain educational course to make up or replace the grade that was previously earned. However, the repeating approach may be debatable with regards of people’s opinions. For instance, some people believe that if a student fails a class, then it should be, mandatory for him/ her to repeat the subject. In Contrary to, other individuals may believe that repeating a class or course is a complete waste of time.
In terms of my perspective, all educational institutions should embrace the repeating policy authorizing students to retake a course and to substitute a higher grade for their report. The reason is that every individual poses different learning methods/rate, they might be experiencing psychological problems and most certainly it would aid in the preparation of a higher level of education. Albert Einstein once said everybody is a genius, but if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree it will live his whole life thinking it’s stupid. Every person is a unique individual, everybody thinks differently and behaves differently but yet the school system expects every student to learn with same learning concepts which causes them to fail. Each individual has different learning methods and time span to grasp different concepts; for instance, not all students were made for educational systems and therefore they will have a longer time to understand a certain material while others can learn with only listening or reading once.
The opportunity of having a new professor or lecture may enhance the learning outcome of the individual since a new strategy is introduced. Ultimately, a second chance gives them the ability to show if they have improved. Garland (2010) points out that “researchers have written about the impacts that psychological illness cause towards student’s educational status”. There are some individuals who are developmentally immature and therefore, they tend to have behavioral problems resulting as being more disengaged with the school curriculum. Others may be stressing due to family drama, bullying and illnesses that could cause them a D+ or in other terms a low letter grade. The ability of having the chance of repeating can allow such students to have time to grow not only physically but mentally. It may also allow them to take this chance as an opportunity to reflect on what really matters in life. Over the years several schools have used the policy of reaping, either a school year or a course. Repeating a subject or an entire year may look like a waste of time but it is a second chance to be better prepared for the next step in life. If a student fails they have shown the lack of understanding of the certain content or preparedness necessary to succeed to a higher level. Allowing the student to repeat the course/school year will help them to master the skills and better understand the subject resulting as obtaining a higher grade. Hence, having a better background and understanding will increase the possibility to succeed in higher levels. If a student who fails doesn’t get held back, then the following year they are just going to keep falling behind.
To me the repeating policy is mandatory since not all students have the same type of learning methods and therefore they might take longer periods to grasp the concept or might need new professors or lectures that will allow them to learn better. Also it is not known if a student is going through tough situation that can result psychological illness that would cause them to fail; therefore, the opportunity to repeat will definitely allow them to grow into mature people that will be able to focus in their education rather than worrying about other things. Lastly, students who have the chance to repeat will allow them to become more knowledgeable resulting as having a better education background. Thus, it is encouraged that all schools should adapt to the repeating policy allowing students to retake a course or school year in order to perform better grades.
