The Olympics originally started as a series of competitions between representatives from cities in Greece. The events were mainly athletic, but also included combat and chariot racing. The Olympics were held every four years and this period, known as Olympiad, was used by the ancient Greeks as a way of time measurement. Winning an event was of great value and recognition as the winners were idolised by the Greeks on a national level. The winners were also immortalized through the writing of poems and construction of statutes. Many winners are documented in ancient Greek myths and legends, stories still being told to this day. For many years, we've written about questionable activities by the Olympics, usually focusing on the organization's insanely aggressive approach to intellectual property, which could be summed up as "we own and control everything."
Yes, the Olympics requires countries to pass special laws that protect its trademarks and copyrights beyond what standard laws allow. Of course, this is really much more about control and money. It's simply shining a light on just how corrupt the whole Olympic setup is. For decades, the Olympics has tried to hide this basic truth, and it has always been able to get various cities and countries to actively compete to suffer through the Olympics requirements, often with promises of big money in tourism and local business as a result. But it looks like jig may be up. Everyone is patriotic during the Olympics, no matter where you are. Every country has pride (bragging rights) in the top athletes they have picked to go represent their country. No one drags on their country, because they want their country to succeed. The athletes picked to go to the Olympics work their entire lives to be the very best. They have had a dream since they were 3 that all they wanted to do is be an Olympian. Watching these athletes make it past their trails to compete in the Olympics is amazing. We are literally watching someone's dreams be achieved on TV or in real life!
Of all the hype surrounding the Olympics, some of the biggest tends to be economic. The event is often billed as a boon to business for its host city - a two-week burst of tourism and valuable television time, as well as a spur for much needed infrastructure investment. But is it true? Do Countries really gain from organizing the Olympic Games? The answer is: It depends, but don't count on it. There may be a few former hosts that experienced a long-term economic benefit, such as Barcelona, but scholarly research has found that any gains are difficult to identify.
