Greed is defined as an excessive desire to obtain or to own more than what one needs or deserves especially concerning material wealth. Greed can be seen in every person on Earth for he/she wants to achieve happiness, not wanting to experience pain or suffering. I define greed as a desire to want more than what one needs to be happy because greed can only give temporary happiness, and since this can only provide temporary happiness, it makes a person to look for more in order to stay happy, and this is why it is one of the 7 sins in the bible for it is a selfish goal to be happy for one. I will identify the main purpose of greed in comparison to other human behaviours and the consequences of greed to you and others.
Greed is involved when one has a desire for money, fame or authority. Greed has only one main goal and that is to seek happiness and satisfaction, but the happiness greed can give is only temporary. As a result of this, a person seeks more to be happy. However, having a desire for happiness comes with a price-that person becomes arrogant, impatient and selfish.
This type of vice can be related to jealousy, selfishness, and fear. Jealousy triggers the desire to have what others have in which you do not have. If you are a righteous person, you work hard to achieve a goal to feel happy when you achieve it. On the contrary, you become selfish that you want it all for yourself and would not even want others to borrow or even touch it. Fear can also be compared to greed. For a person to not feel pain or suffering, that person wants to have all that makes him/her happy, but by being selfish to others, he/she becomes lonely instead. In the end, each person only wants to feel happiness.
Now, what are the results of greediness? Greed only contributes to conflict with others and frustration on one’s self. A person having all the riches, fame plus authority may feel happy for a limited time, but in the long run, you become grumpy, frustrated, discontented and anxious, not wanting to lose your accumulated wealth. Thus, conflict starts to arise until you become lonely as you lose the ties with those around you and you tend to forget the things that are far more important than wealth, fame and authority. These results in having a blind eye for the true happiness money cannot buy
Greed can only give happiness to you but to others it gives conflict. Achieving all you have wanted but with contentment may result in happiness not only for you but also for others. You cannot sacrifice anything without losing sight of what is important-true happiness with those important to you.
