Resilience is one’s quality to remain stronger after being knocked down by a situation in life. According to Seligman and Csikszentmihalyi (2014), resilient individuals recover easily from a tough moment and stand stronger than before rather than giving room for failure to run over and drain them. The challenges they face gives them room to explore other courses of navigating their endeavors and succeed.
Psychologists have found that the most resilient individuals have some characters in common. These characteristics have given them the hope recovering from misfortune. These include self-esteem, embracing change, being optimistic and considering failure as part of the feedback and possible outcome of an endeavor (Seligman and Csikszentmihalyi, 2014).
Self-esteem and positive belief in one’s ability can help cope stress and recover from a difficult time. Persons with high self-esteem knows their strengths and always try to improve on their weaknesses. Thus, such individuals will treat their failure as their weakness and will give it room for improvement. Moreover, these individuals treat failure as part of the expected feedback in the accomplishment of any task.
Being optimistic also helps to boost resilience levels of an individual. Despite a difficult moment, optimists still give a trail. They do not ignore the problem but faces it as its and give room hope for changes. They also embrace change in case of a negative outcome.
An example of a person who has proved to be resilient in life is the current President of Zimbabwe Robert Mugabe. He has remained the President of Zimbabwe since independence despite objection by international bodies and opponents. His critics have accused him of corruption and misuse of power. However, he has remained resilient and win the hearts of Zimbabweans who have elected him to serve them as their president for over 29 years. Some of the qualities that have enabled him to remain resilient despite the opposition include being optimistic, high self-esteem. Moreover, he still enjoys the love of some of the Zimbabweans who re-elected him (Bratton, 2014).
