Philosophy is an academic field concerned with the generation of a clear understanding of such phenomenon as nature, the confines of knowledge, and the rules of moral judgment. As such, the field is made up of five branches: metaphysics, epistemology, ethics, logic, and aesthetics, all of which contribute to the achievement of its goals. (Ochulor, Apebende, & Metuonu, 2011) Each of the five branches of philosophy is founded on unique but interrelated phenomena. This paper will concentrate on metaphysics as a branch of philosophy and will seek to give a vivid description of the sub- branch as well as its importance.
Metaphysics is a fundamental and indispensable branch of philosophy that is mainly concerned with the nature of reality in life. It's centered on the "what is?" question and as such seeks to explain everything in existence as well as dissect it. (Fine, 2011) It's, therefore, an investigative branch of philosophy that forms the foundation for all existential explanations. According to Aristotle, metaphysics is further divided into three sub-branches: Ontology, natural theology, and universal science. Ontology studies the states of being as well as existence while natural theology is inclined to religious affairs and Godliness, and Universal science is a dissection of the foundational logical laws as well as reasoning.
The indispensability of metaphysics is due to its primary objective of explaining the nature of reality. Metaphysics forms the foundation upon which all scientific ideas are resolved and their validity as well as distinct elements established. The fact that all scientific endeavors are aimed at explaining a particular phenomenon, metaphysics comes into play by evoking the inquisitive nature of research with the "what is?" question. It, therefore, forms the core driving force for any scientific inquiry. (Ochulor, Apebende, & Metuonu, 2011)
The principles of Metaphysics also contribute to the development and furtherance of social norms in the society, as justified by the fact that human beings are always acting as per specified principles of philosophy, whether religiously defined or personal. In the aspect of human life, metaphysics is also a driving force for religion as people seek to understand the reality of divinity, holiness, evil, and the immortal nature of man.
Metaphysics is a fundamental component of philosophy that plays vital roles in human life. By seeking to understand the reality of every phenomenon or existence in life, metaphysics is responsible for triggering an inquisitive mind in people. The curious nature of metaphysics is therefore of absolute value to human life as it results in continuous innovations as well as scientific developments. It, therefore, makes life livable by explaining the nature of everything that exists. Metaphysics, therefore, brings out the actual truth of all matters of life, and as such it forms a very critical branch of philosophy
