In order for one to evaluate and identify with the different business organizational structures, we must pay close attention of the standards and meaning that compose that structure. Businesses work in many different ways as the world is full of technology and new structures that we have to consider when it comes to company cultures and innovative ways in which companies are run. To be able to cover and have a better understanding of the concepts revolving around Organizational structure and pop culture in movies, I thought the movie “The Devil Wear Prada” which I thought It is an over the top example of the theory and perfect to analyze a business scenario from it. The Movie regularly provides a good insight into the inner working of an organization. It analyze how the characters as individuals and groups interact with each other, how they think and feel about each other in an organization.
She leads the company with a lot of power and this creates a lot of fear in the employees. This can be seen in the movie where everyone panics on her arrival. This is a clear example of how the organization is run. The organization in The Devil Wears Prada is headed by Miranda, her assistant Andy who is also assisted by Emily Charlton. They are forced to quickly learn Miranda’s preferences and behaviors in order to facilitate the smooth running of their business and in addition to that, in order to meet Miranda’s expectations. Andrea is forced to change her behaviors and attitude of a simple and plain style in order to gain acceptance and adapt to the fashion world organization since she is no longer in journalism. Miranda’s leadership style in The Devil Wears Prada is pitiless as she wants her employees to do everything she wants without questioning. She keeps them on toes and for sure this helps the organization to expand in the fashion world. Miranda is a leader quick witted and ruthless and she never accepted anything less than perfect from her employees (Ryan, N. 2007.pp 20)
In the first scene of the clip there is an enculturation performance between Andy (Anne Hathaway) and Nigel (Stanley Tucci). Stanley is making it perfectly clear that to be an acceptable employee at Runway Andy has to lose weight and wear designer clothes. Physical symbols that represent Runway (and its employees) are designer brands and trendy appearances. He makes a comment about how he will never find anything in the Runway closet to fit a size six, and that Hathaway’s character is in desperate need of Gucci and Chanel. To be an employee of Runway she must be thin, fashionable and pretty.
In the second scene the two female employees are participating in a political performance by gossiping about Hathaway’s character. Emily (Emily Blunt) is telling a coworker the story of when she first met Andy, and how she knew by her appearance that she would be an “utter disaster” at Runway. There is also an example of social performance in the second scene. When Hathaway enters the room the three girls participate in a polite, but tense, exchange. Polite comments are exchanged even though all three girls are aware that they do not get along.
Finally in the last scene there is an example of ritual performance when Andy performs a task ritual. She enters her boss Miranda’s (Meryl Streep) office and places a glass of water on her desk and magazines (something that she must do every morning before Miranda arrives). You can also see in the background that Miranda throws her coat and bag on Andy’s desk before she enters her office (a ritual shown in the clip above that happens every single morning).
