“Some things about living still weren’t quite right, though” Vonnegut, Kurt.
Stereotypes, racism, and hate are holding many people back. You would think that people would be over all that these days but they aren’t. Many of the minorities including women, people of color, and the LGBT community suffer social disadvantages
Women have faced discrimination throughout history. Whether it was in the workplace, school, at home, or even in public. Sexual bias is a big deal in school. Even though girls and boys enter school with the same ambitions and skills, the classroom still has sexist conditioning that results in low confidence and self-esteem issues. Women also face a significant sexism in the workplace. It’s mostly men that are jealous because women have a higher status than them. It can also be men that think they are superior and a woman can’t do the job as good as them. There is also a significant amount behavior made towards colleagues that has a sexual motive. Even if they hold a job that requires the same amount of education and skills, they are still being looked down upon and discriminated. Women have been trying to stand up for themselves and they think this is their big year. They will protest and show they are strong. I personally think it is ineffective. The problem with protests is that, practically speaking, they don’t actually do anything. You are just a bunch of people complaining.
Racism exists in all cultures. People may think that people of color “don’t have it that bad” but racism throughout the years has had a huge effect on recent times. People usually act racist because they simply hate another race, or that they conceal their fear with racism.
Most racism starts in the household. They way children are brought up and taught have a huge effect on how they treat and view others. For example, if a child is told all black people are criminals, or all Muslims are terrorist, that is usually, how they feel about that particular race. For some reason, African Americans and Muslims are being targeted recently. Most Muslims feel ashamed of their religion because people are so hateful towards them. Black people can’t even leave their houses without the fear of being shot for no reason or having a hate crime committed towards them. Getting a job, a house, or really, anything is hard for someone of color. People are so judgemental and quick to assume.
The real question is, how can we put an end to racism in 2018? How can we stop racism from holding people back? Sadly, during this age, we won’t. We can’t stop horrible people from being horrible people. “SOCRATES: What do you think? From the beginning people like this have never managed, whether on their own or with the help by others, to see anything besides the shadows that are [continually] projected on the wall opposite them by the glow of the fire”. Plato.
It’s okay to be gay in 2018! Right? According to some people it isn’t. Even before the shooting rampage at a gay nightclub in Orlando Florida, LGBT people were already the most targeted in hate crime in America. Hate crimes against the LGBT community is not only in America, but they are also all over the world. Brazil has held the world record for hate-based LGBT murders with 331 recorded in 2016. More recently, that number has been getting higher and higher. One LGBT person is killed every 24 hours in Brazil. You would think, after people getting killed so much, they would just start to accept people for being in the LGBT community. The majority of society is tolerable to the LGBT community, while others absolutely hate them. They hate them because they either don’t understand them, don’t accept them, or it goes against their religion. Others link homosexuality to pedophilia and claim that LGBT people are threats to home and society. It doesn’t make sense to me how you could think gay people are anything like pedophiles. I mean, just because someone likes the same sex doesn’t mean they like your child. Most people are afraid to “come out” because they do not want to be judged or hated upon. It is horrible that we have come this far with accepting the LGBT community, but they are still getting killed for being who they are.
