Dolly Parton is an American singer who originally wrote the song ‘I will always love you’ in 1974 then later on she recorded another version for the 1982 movie ‘the best little whorehouse in Texas’ she originally wrote this song after a breakup. Whitney Huston was… In 1992 the late Whitney Huston remade the song and turned it into something different something that most people would enjoy more than Dolly Parton’s original.
In relation to our global context orientation in space and time I think that when Dolly Parton wrote the song was during the period when men in general never used respect females and this was the time where everybody wanted to be loved. Similarly, Whitney Huston’s version was when everyone was respected by one another and no man would do anything to hurt a woman and I think that this was the kind of respect Dolly Parton needed in her years. She needed someone who was right for her.
Dolly Parton’s lyrics are sad in the sense that the person singing the song will always love the person who the song is being sung to. The original version by Dolly Parton was a country ballad which is basically sad and slow country music. In comparison to, Whitney Huston switched things up by changing the song to a pop, soul, and adult contemporary hit.
At the start of the song Whitney starts with a raw and vulnerable acapella opening “if I should stay, I would only be in your way…” she stays unaccompanied for about 50 seconds with her soft, regretful vocal while doing this an acoustic guitar wraps its simple string around her and from there the song continues by building up. Then later on the keyboard joins her then after one minute the drum beat joins in. After thirty seconds the volume becomes louder also a playful flutter before the saxophone also. While singing she holds key notes steady just to show the emotions. When she sings she adds drama to her sounds. After she sings “but most of all, I wish you love” as she sings this she sounds like she’s lost her resolve this creates tension and she might turn back and then the drum beat strikes once again and she powers back with the final, triumphal chorus.
Both the songs have different musical genres and this means that the audience for each audience of the songs were different. While most of the lyrics are similar Dolly Parton’s version gives no doubt that there is a romantic interest involved this is because the song is slow and soothing. I think that the main message of the song was that love is very powerful and that love makes us do wild things and also the lyrics show that no matter where life leads, love can always be present.
While listening to Whitney Huston’s version I thought that she was the original writer/ artist this is because Whitney made her version more enjoyable. In her version her emotions are shown and heard throughout the whole song and I think that it’s because her vocals were perfect and her voice is effortless, and it doesn’t take away from how sincere her tone is. Dolly Parton’s original version of this song has a softer tone which makes us feel like she wanted us to know that it’s time to move on from what was once good. Dolly’s version has a slower, lower tone compared to Whitney Huston’s version.
In Dolly Parton’s version instruments such as the piano, bass, drums, harmonica and guitar can be heard while in Whitney Huston’s version instruments such as the keyboard, violin, saxophone, drums, and acoustic guitar. The rhythm and mood are some of the things that draw people’s attention. Whitney’ version is inspiring and influential. The way she sustains her notes was incredible while Parton’s version takes a different upset. Throughout the song her rhythm is calmer. Her pitch doesn’t change much.
I feel that she also wrote this song to express her experience in ways that she couldn’t (She wrote the song to express her emotions through music). The song is about these two couples who love each other very much but then they are afraid to love because they don’t want to hurt another but eventually they end things because they thought that they weren’t right for each other. I also think that the song is about how Jesus was crucified on a cross for us and by him doing that, it inspired dolly Patron to write this song. It is debatable that the song could be about the force of love and also the love Christ showed when dying on the cross for us.
