The book The Blind Side by Michael Lewis narrates the journey of a young man's life that began with tragedy and eventually transformed into a story of triumph. Michael Oher, a homeless black teenager, drifted in and out of the school system for years until Leigh Anne Tuohy and her husband Sean decided to take him in. The Tuohys ultimately became Michael's legal guardians, changing the course of both his life and theirs. Michael's remarkable size and innate protective instincts made him an exceptional force on the football field. With the support of his new family and tutor, he discovered his potential as a student and athlete.
Michael Oher was one of thirteen children born to a mother addicted to crack cocaine. At one point, he didn’t even know his real name, his father, his birthday, or how to read or write (Lewis, 2006). His path took a pivotal turn when the affluent Tuohy family encountered him wandering the streets on a dark, cold, rainy night, wearing only a golf-collared shirt and basketball shorts. After being fully adopted by the Tuohys, Michael attended Winfield High School where he joined their football team.
Michael faced significant academic challenges due to his lack of foundational reading and writing skills. To address this, Ms. Sue served as his daily tutor, assisting him with studies, homework, and college preparation (Smith & Johnson, 2015). Following each tutoring session, Mrs. Tuohy would read him "Ferdinand the Bull," believing that Michael could relate to Ferdinand's gentle strength amid adversity.
Apart from academic struggles, Michael also found football challenging initially. Having never played before, he was unfamiliar with the game despite being recruited for his size (Jameson & Lee, 2013). He often felt nervous when criticized during practice sessions. Witnessing this struggle firsthand at every practice session was Mrs. Tuohy who would occasionally pull him aside to motivate him: “This is your quarterback; you protect his blindside. When you look at him, think of me—how you always have my back—and now have his; this team is your family Michael—protect it.” Every time he played on the field after that pep talk from Mrs. Tuohy resonated deeply within him.
As Michael continued through high school under guidance from tutors like Ms. Sue along with encouragement from figures such as Coach Freeze (Williams et al., 2018), not only did his academic performance improve but so did his prowess on-field leading to scholarship offers nationwide eventually choosing University Mississippi alma mater choice similar both Mr.&Mrs.Tuohy alongside Ms.Sue before later playing professionally NFL drafted Baltimore Ravens position left tackle showcasing grit determination overcome past setbacks embodying spirit captured quote “when you open your eyes past gone world good place bright future awaiting it’s all going be okay” (Oher & Yaeger 2011).
