The United Kingdom (UK), or the so-called Great Britain, of the 18th, 19th and early 20th century was the world’s foremost power. During the notable time period of ‘Pax Britannica’ which was between 1815 and 1914, it successfully maintained unrivalled supremacy and unprecedented international peace. Though in records, the UK does not believe in interfering severely with other countries’ motives behind its actions, the unlawful acts of People’s Republic of China (PRC) undermined the rules-based order that UK is committed to, which made the concerns of Britain rise exponentially. As a nation thriving to maintain international peace since ages, it is important for the UK to stand against the claims made by PRC to impose dominance in the South China Sea.
The British responded with a series of actual and intended actions. The announcement of flying the RAF Typhoons through the South China Sea and the participation in exercises with Japan, South Korea, and Malaysia was a significant step. The British officials wishes to commence the sail of aircraft carrier on the Pacific by 2020. Attendance in the annual two-plus-two meeting between the foreign and defence ministers of Australia and UK, dubbed AUKMIN, suggested a more muscular British presence in the South China Sea. Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson was reported saying during a speech organized by the Australian think tank, the Lowy Institute for International Policy, that Britain would indeed sail its two new aircraft carriers to the South China Sea. Britain’s actions are backed up by the freedom of navigation exercises and the moral goal is to get countries working together to safeguard and promote regional peace and prosperity.
On 12th July 2016, the Permanent Court Arbitration (PCA) released The South China Sea Arbitration. According to PCA case number 2013-19, there was an arbitration case brought by the Philippines against the PRC under Annex VII to the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) concerning certain issues in the South China Sea, including the legality of China's """"nine-dotted line"""" claim. Rejection of the tribunal by PRC has caused a strong negative prospective of the country internationally. It not only made it appear that a developed country may have the power to disobey international laws but also that it declines the ruling in favour of Philippines making the country seem insignificant.
The UK remains a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council, a founding member of the G7, G8, G20, NATO, OECD, WTO, Council of Europe, OSCE, and the Commonwealth of Nations, which is a legacy of the British Empire. It strongly believes severe actions should be taken to maintain the influence of international bodies on countries as in the end, the main goal is to decline conflict and encourage world peace. UK foresees taking stronger actions in the future to acts of unlawfulness and prohibit inequality among countries.
