The tragedy of Katrina in 2005 had a large impact, but has anyone taken the time to think about how the government could have contributed to the mass destruction? Peeling back the layers, its evident the government played a large roll in Hurricane Katrina and the aftermath of it. Money and racism shaped how Hurricane Katrina was handled by the United States government and state government.
For one, most people know about how the levees were poorly constructed which was probably a lack of funds. Those levees contributed to a large portion of the water that overpowered people, cars, houses, etc. But also those lack of funds had to have come from a result of the state’s debt and attempts to cut back. A cut back that cost thousands of people lives. Those thousands of people consisted of a large culture of African Americans. In the 2010 census, New Orleans community was roughly 60 percent African Americans. (www.quickfacts.census.gov). Though 5 years after the devastation, where some people never came back, more than half the community is African American. As a root of American society, slavery plays a part in the economic status of the people in Louisiana. After slavery, the United States, and other countries, have had an immense issue with racism. American have an unfair advantage of the African American people because they started building themselves up and starting their history a lot sooner than white people let them. With that lack of advantage, African Americans, tend to have less money, resulting living in poorer communities. Living in these poorer places, such as New Orleans, Louisiana relates back to the governments funding of things. The poor funding of New Orleans can ultimately be a result of racism and slavery, a root of America.
