Technological change is the ability to increase the quality of efficiency of a process or product so as to achieve more profits while reducing the inputs. In the contemporary world, technologies are being developed every fortnight. Among the many technologies out there, a significant proportion of the technologies are aimed at improving the manner in which businesses are conducted. I agree with the fact that technology has had several positive impacts in the modern era. Technology in business plays several different roles that are crucial for the operation and survival of business. This makes technology a necessity for any business that aims at having a competitive advantage in the modern market.
Technology has impacted on various business divisions including security, data management, automation and processes. This has significantly increase efficiency in operations since tasks are completed conveniently compared to traditional practices characterized by tedious operation. Technology evolves frequently which may prove difficult for companies to keep changing or upgrading the technologies they have. As long as a technology is still relevant, businesses should not be worried about improved version of the same since the practicality offered is comparable. It is worth noting that newer technologies are also expensive to buy, install and run. However, it is important for businesses to adapt relevant technologies owing to the benefits that they bring along. If a technology package seems complicated, it is important for the business to hire professional to guide the staff on how to use it effectively. Among the several impacts that technology has imposed on businesses, this paper will evaluate the most relevant impacts in support of the question (Technological change has had a positive impact on businesses. To what extent do you agree?)
Enhances the overall efficiency of the business; In the presence of technology, businesses are able to operate effectively and efficiently. Technology has provided businesses with reliable machines and application that have significantly improved the way businesses operate (Baldwin, 2015). Modern businesses have access to several tools that are helpful to the success of their businesses. One of the benefits is the ability communicate with stakeholders across the world through the use of platforms like email. This allows businesses to send and receive valuable data and information. This has been possible through the advancement of internet. Businesses are able to negotiate terms with partners and customers efficiently which allows for business growth (Pur, 2013).
The internet has also made it possible for businesses to reach out more people than conventional businesses that are limited by demographics and geographical boundaries (Davis, 2013). By searching the internet about a certain company, customers can access the information from any place across the globe that is connected to the internet.
Automation of Operations; Businesses vary in size and scope; however, for maximum results to achieved, there is dire need for automation of various processes in a business. Technology has provided an array of options that business can choose form and automate their processes in order to improve their efficiency and withstand stiff competition (Dudovskiy, 2014). Automation has greatly impacted on modern business. While the initial capital may be high, automation has helped several businesses to cut their running costs and overheads especially by replacing human labour that is expensive.
Technology has victimized humans by replacing them in workplaces and taking away their sources of livelihood.
Technology has rendered many people jobless across the globe. The advancement of technologies and automation of processes has cause people working in the related position to be replaced by machines (Nasrollahniya, 2016). Since businesses are seeking to improve profits and efficiency, they replace humans with machines that can handle the same task more effectively but at a cheaper price.
When a robot that can paint 20 cars in one day replaces human laborers in Toyota’s assembly line, we clearly see the form of discrimination and unethical replacement of people with responsibilities by technology (Mansfield, 2017).
The counter argument is untrue because technology has provided more opportunities for people around the world. An example is when a car manufacturing company opens a new facility (Santangelo, 2013). They hire many people to complete various tasks which proves that technology provides opportunities to people rather than denying them.
Business Security; as technology advances, so does the vices affiliated with technology. Recently information and data security has become an issue of concern since thieves and hackers are continually sourcing for important information to frisk businesses (Tourian, 2015). This has led to the development of information security systems and softwares for the businesses. Not only so these systems secure the data, they have also been useful in providing business trends that are important when businesses are making decisions.
Employee Monitoring; technology has enabled business owners to manage their employees. By using applications or softwares to track what employees are doing behind their desktops, managers are bale to establish the employees who are uncompetitive plan on the appropriate way of dealing with them. These softwares also help managers and supervisors to identify the best practices as well as the failing practices and advocate for the best practices (Tornikoski, 2017). By using such technologies, businesses have managed to develop reliable practices and establish strong workforces that deliver the goals of the business.
There is more laxity and information insecurity today that there was in previous decades. While technology should make things better, it has failed to improve the situation of data insecurity and laxity in work places (Heenetigala, 2016). There are more cases reported about cyber security on a daily basis that were nonexistent in the past. Technology has opened the world up for new threats that can be devastating.
In 2016, one of the internet giants, Yahoo, was victim of data bleach that affected the information of 500 million subscribers (Mansfield, 2017). With major companies falling victim of security treats, it is an indicator that technology is not much effective in preventing such attacks.
The counter argument is incorrect due to the fact that technology has developed several protocols for businesses to protect themselves against cyber-attack (Smith, 2016). Such vices are expected and they serve as proof that technology is existent and open for development. In any case, many are the threats that are curbed by technologies than those that are successfully executed.
There was a time when technology used to be an innovative luxury. However, things have changed. Businesses find technology to be a necessity that any well-meaning business should adapt. In order to withstand pressure from competitors, businesses have developed innovate technologies to give them a competitive advantage. It is true that technology is an integral part of modern businesses and without it, the current rate of globalization would not have been achieved. There are several businesses offering the same products and services in the market today. However, the company that wins the day is the one that adopts technologies that help them reduce the cost and increase efficiency in offering their products.
