He fell in a group of older students, that went by the names of, Professor William Small, Lieutenant Governor Francis Fauquier and lawyer George Wythe. With them helping Thomas Jefferson he had succeeded his education.

From 1767-74 he studied law in Virginia and had a lot of success. He tried many cases and won a majority of them. During the years studying law, he met Martha Skelton he truly fell in love with her. She was the wealthiest women in Virgina. They got married January 1st in 1772. They had six kids together but only two survived into adulthood, Martha the firstborn child and Mary the fourth. Unfortunately only Martha survived her father. After all that with getting married to Martha and losing 4 kids after having only six children.
