To Eradicate Slums Using Technology in Urban Areas

Eight hundred and fifty million people currently live in urban slums in low- and middle-income countries – about one in every seven people in the world. Lack of infrastructure and services contributes to very high burdens of injury, illness and premature death among slum dwellers. Reducing slums, therefore, should be a high priority for governments, donors, NGOs and others but this necessary part is forgotten by everyone during urbanization.

Providing basic infrastructure, sanitation, education facilities, lightning and community spaces are the top priorities in the minds of the change makers. An effective approach must start with an understanding of why shanty towns form, and then put in place a financial framework to avoid their formation to upgrade existing slums. Some middle-income countries – such as Chile and Costa Rica – and cities in middle-income countries -such as Juarez, Mexico – have effectively done this. The major public costs come in the form of the investments in basic services necessary to upgrade slums – reordering the settlement to allow an appropriate street layout, relocating families in order to do this, and the basic infrastructure (paving main roads, water, sanitation).

Other than infrastructural problems, the people in slum suffer from lack of clean water and they lack electricity. In order to improve the life of poor people in Slums a plan to improve water conditions by using Solar Water purifiers which is cost effective and can be provided to the poor people by the government. There is a lot of waste near slum areas as the slum areas are normally near garbage sites. We propose that these waste garbage items be used to create electricity that can be provided. This waste to energy conversion can be highly useful and provide electricity. With the help of science and technology, we can easily decrease slum areas and their conditions.
