There’s something about travelling over the Christmas period that gives me that festive buzz! I love exploring different places, especially in December. As the countdown to Christmas officially begins, there’s undoubtedly a cheerier vibe in the air! For me, it’s also about experiencing how different places all around the world celebrate Christmas and what their traditions are. So, I thought I’d share with you my favorite places I’ve either been or would love to visit during the holiday season.
Brussels, Belgium
For the past five or six years, I’ve visited Brussels for a short weekend break, usually, the last weekend before Christmas. If you’re not in the Christmas spirit, yet, Brussel’s Winter Wonders will set things straight. For five-festive weeks, the cobbled streets and pretty squares of Brussels spring to life with snow-dusted market chalets, several ice-rinks, buzzing bars, the sweet scent of scrumptious foods and a Ferris wheel. Without a doubt, you could spend a whole day here without retracing your steps. I’d also recommend finding a stall that sells these chocolate-coated marshmallow domes - heavenly.
Paris, France
Disneyland Paris. Need I say more?
London, UK
To get into the festive spirit, you don’t have to travel far. I love visiting London at Christmas - when the streets are bustling with life, as Christmas shoppers scour for that perfect present, you begin to feel so Christmassy. Wrapped up in several layers, sipping on a velvety chai latte (my go-to Christmas drink) it’s the little things that matter at Christmas. It’s about soaking in the festive atmosphere, browsing the market stalls, but not necessarily spending a fortune.
Lapland, Finland
I haven’t been but this is definitely at the top of my list, and it should be on yours too! Who doesn’t want to celebrate Christmas where Santa lives? It looks magical! If there’s anywhere that recreates the Christmas fairytales then it’s here. You can meet Santa Claus, feed reindeers and even enjoy a sleigh ride! Christmas spirit is not the only thing in the air here. When the sun sets, and the sky clears, the Northern lights will be the real “star” in the sky!
New York, United States
New York has never been a destination I’m desperate to visit, but I guess more of an “I want to say I’ve visited it” place. When I do visit New York though, it will definitely be in December. All I can imagine is walking down Central Park, with the Christmas lights twinkling and the city bustling with life!
Montréal, Canada
I’ve heard Montréal’s Christmas market is listed as one of the top 10 Christmas markets to get you into the holiday spirit (worldwide)! If that’s the case, then I’d love to visit Montréal to find out why for myself! And if You’ve ever fancied a white Christmas, then you’re guaranteed one there!
Prague, Czech Republic
Prague has got to be one of the most aesthetically pleasing places to visit in Europe, especially at Christmas! It’s a city, made up of old, historical buildings etched with exquisite detail. My parents recently visited Prague to celebrate their 20th anniversary and fell in love with Prague’s beautiful charm. If you’re looking for a romantic escape this Christmas, then nothing is more romantic than walking hand in hand around the back streets of Prague’s old streets and castle.
Dubai
Having visited Dubai for the first time in February this year and realizing Dubai like to be the best at everything, I can only imagine what Christmas is like there; which is why Dubai is on my places to see at Christmas! I also see it as an experience to know what it’s like to celebrate Christmas where it’s a lot warmer than home. Writing this post has given me serious Wanderlust, and if I could, I’d be straight off to Finland. Where would you choose to go, comment below?
