Happiness is something that everybody pursues, but it is one of the most challenging aspects of life to attain. Happiness doesn’t happen out of nowhere; it has to be worked on. One must put their all into it in order to achieve true happiness. They have to build their happiness from the ground up. Happiness also has to be a choice in one’s mind: the choice to be happy. To me, happiness is being surrounded by the people and the things you truly love. For example, a happy family, supportive friends, financial stability, true love, good health, etc. These are the foundational pillars that support the structure of a joyful life.
Albert Camus once said, “You will never be happy if you continue to search for what happiness consists of. You will never live if you are looking for the meaning of life.” This means happiness and the meaning of life are things you must experience. Trying to understand them will not bring you happiness or the meaning of life. It is like trying to understand humor; understanding why a joke is funny will not make you laugh. Since we know that happiness and meaning are subjective, everyone has their own version of them. You'll never cease to find what it contains unless you create your own. You build your own happiness and discover what makes you happy. A way to discover your own happiness is by saying yes or no to a call to adventure, embracing the opportunities that life presents.
Happiness depends on how someone spends their time. Growing up, we were taught to pick a career that we liked. This reflects your happiness once you grow up. We were informed about this when we were little because no one wants to be stuck in a dead-end job that makes you very frustrated and unhappy. To be happy, one may have to make important choices about what career profession they choose. If the job makes you miserable, making you regret your life choices, you should probably look for another job that truly makes you happy. After all, we only get one chance in life, and we don’t want to waste it on something that makes us unhappy. Having a job that makes you happy gives you reasons to wake up bright and early in the morning. It fuels your passion and keeps you motivated to strive for excellence.
Happiness is built from the ground up, not just given to you. For example, someone poor can be happier than someone rich. Someone poor could be happy because they have loved ones surrounding them. As people say, “Money doesn’t buy you happiness.” This quote applies to a happy poor family. They may not have enough money for financial stability, but they have each other to make them happy. Regardless of the problems, obstacles, and challenges they may face, as long as they have each other, they can overcome the challenges. Although rich people may seem to have it easy because of the fame and money they have, with fame and money comes a downside. Rich people have to stay up to society’s standards, which could lead to their downfall. The pressure of society can lead to demise. Trying to fit in and please other people instead of yourself and the people who matter to you the most can be detrimental. I would rather be poor and happy than rich and unhappy, as true contentment is priceless.
In conclusion, anybody can find happiness, not just a temporary pleasure, but natural, reliable, long-lasting happiness. This isn’t something that comes to a random person. Happiness is not something that can be handed to you. You need to have the determination, desire, and perseverance to have a happy life. You only live once, and wasting your life on something that does not make you happy will only make you more regretful of your life choices. Anyone can build their own happiness. Happiness can occur to anyone because everyone has the right to be happy. It is a universal pursuit that transcends boundaries and is attainable with the right mindset and effort.
