Why there is a problem?

A quick review of what transpired between Eden and Abrams reveals that since they began working together, they have never seen peace reign in their midst. Abrams feels that Eden has been working to see him fail and fired. However, Eden argues that he has no ill motive against Abrams but this not true based on certain facts. While performing his duties, Eden is professional. He just directs Abrams without giving valid reasons for his actions. For instance, when he asked Abrams to report to work for overtime, he did not explain the reason for that.

Abrams felt that it was not necessary for him to work for extra hours over the weekend. After consulting with Johnson, the Sturdivant test facility supervisor, Abrams convinced him that it was not necessary to work as far the project deadline is concerned. It was after Johnson revealed his reasons that Abrams saw the need to work over the weekend. Thus, the problem is a slight misunderstanding between Eden and Abrams. Moreover, another impending challenge facing Missile test facility is Abrams quitting his job before completion of the project at hand.

Can it be solved and what solving means

The problem can be solved through mediation and discussion. Solving, in this case, means restoring understanding between Eden and Abrams. Earlier on, Johnson had tried, and he succeeded. Based on the current situation, Johnson still has the power to table the problem and iron the issue out.

Looking at the chronological build up of the problem, it is clear that it could have been solved before things fall apart. The whole group of these senior staff working on the project should have come up with operating procedures that would see each of them work without placing undue hardship on the other. If the computer was free at specific times of the day, he could have worked without much supervision. Moreover, if Eden could have been considerate enough, Abrams could have felt free to interact with him when necessary.

As things stand out now, Johnson is the only hope of ensuring that the project comes to an end successfully by convincing Abrams not to resign. He should liaise with System Design Section Head in Allentown to ensure that the project come to completion successfully in the hands of Abrams as the programmer. Johnson should try to make Eden understand that his role is just to review the design and adherence of the program to the specifications and not how correct it is. This would help avoid offending Abrams. Abrams should also be made to explain if the program would go through without following the government approved procedure. System Design Section Head in Allentown can also try to save the company from failing to deliver the program on time and with the required specifications by sending experts to consult and work with Abrams. They can also give a guideline and the specific roles of each employee.

What we learn?

From the case study, there are certain lessons learned. Researchers have found that while performing duties in office for instance supervision, it is important to be considerate about the welfare of others. This is done by being open to the juniors. It is good to explain reasons behind an action to the employees affected. This would make them feel secure and valued by their seniors. Moreover, seniors should stick to their roles and avoid going beyond their jurisdictions to avoid offending others (Wallace, 2013).
