Urbanization in Seoul, South Korea

Introduction

Located in East Asia lies the Asian Mega City Seoul. Presence as the capital city of South Korea Mega City is well known around the world for a place for society to thrive in. With an area of 605.2km2 and a rising population of 10 million much of Asia’s population is attracted to the Korean Mega City. Seoul advises many things to bring people into the city. The pull factor that Seoul advise is the opportunity to make money. In the Korean Mega City, it is easy to find occupations and thrive in business. The push factors that pull people into the Korean Mega City are the lack of job opportunities in neighboring countries. Many Asian countries don’t offer as many job opportunities to the population which makes many people immigrate to Seoul. This then makes it harder for the population to make money which eventually leads them into poverty. Although due to Seoul provides occupations to the population it prevents them from suffering. This is why Seoul; South Korea deserves to be an Asian Mega City.

Rapid Urbanization

South Korea’s rapid urbanization started in 1950. Rapid urbanization created a stronger Korean economy but also increased the amount of people living in urban areas. However, even though the urban part of South Korea was finalized to its best state the rural part of South Korea remained undeveloped. This led to a small number of people living in poverty. This shows that even though rapid urbanization has benefited parts of the country there are other parts that will always suffer. Rapid urbanization has created Seoul a better city with an improvement in facilities and technology, although there is no doubt that some of the population is suffering. In Mega-City Seoul, the speed of rapid urbanization has been highly damaging to the surroundings around the city. Seoul has many rural areas and most of these rural areas are being created into cities. This then leaves people with no homes. Even though it may seem that Seoul struggled with rapid urbanization, so did many other countries as well as their cities. Many Asian countries suffered from rapid urbanization worse than South Korea. This is why it is safe to say that South Korea has efficiently tackled this problem. Quality of Life and Standard of Living

South Korea is classified as an extremely safe country. With one of the lowest crime rates of 14.99/100, it’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to live. Many people assume that South Korea is a dangerous place due them being located next to North Korea, although this isn’t true. South Korea is a peaceful country with delicious food and extremely useful public transport. This brings a lot of tourists to the country. The cities in South Korea aren’t that expensive although the capital city, Seoul is affluent. Seoul is a nice city with nature to admire and places to have fun, although prices in Seoul are extremely expensive. The reason that prices in Seoul are so expensive is that Seoul brings a reputation to the world on being wealthy. Most cities in South Korea are cheap to live in, though staying in Seoul is a totally different experience. With good facilities and technology, this is the main reason Seoul is an expensive city. Even though Seoul be an expensive city it doesn’t stop people from living there.

Economic Factors

South Korea is one of the most regarded countries when it comes to economics. A large amount of people are attracted to this country because of the main city. Seoul is a place to help people stay financially strong as the city offers more careers, opportunities, and high wages for the population. With reliable and cheap public transport, it allows many people to not buy cars. Seoul also appeals to consumers as there is a wide range of commodities to choose from. This also allows the population to have more of a variety of jobs. As much as Asian Mega City has many advantages there are also many disadvantages. The main disadvantage for Mega City Seoul is house prices. Housing is typically the main expense for the people living in Seoul. To afford a house in Seoul you must be wealthy. Many people in Seoul can’t afford to buy a house so instead, they live in apartments. Even though housing may be Seoul’s main expense it doesn’t stop people from moving to the mega City. Environmental Impact

Air quality is a major problem in Seoul, South Korea. The Korean Mega City is known for constructing nuclear weapons. The facilities needed to construct these weapons produce a lot of pollution. Not only do these facilities produce bad air quality they also take up land. By taking up land it destroys a lot of animals’ habitats. Seoul and the whole of South Korea are conscious about this, so they have agreed to cut the number of facilities needed to create nuclear weapons. Renewable energy is also a major problem in South Korea. Most of South Korea’s energy comes from coal and oil. This also produces a large amount of pollution and a large land cut. The Korean Mega Cities government has been aware of this for some time, so in 2010 the government disbursed $8.2billion to construct a wind farm. This is why by 2020 the country believes that 20% of the electricity will be from renewable resources. As much as there are many environmental issues in Seoul the whole country is working together to make this country as environmentally friendly as possible.Air Quality in Seoul.

Conclusion

Overall rapid urbanization has benefited Seoul. Rapid urbanization has made Seoul be successful in keeping its people healthy and safe. Furthermore, in the process of completing this act, they have also made the city safe as well. It is extremely hard to believe that Seoul has been able to sustainably develop a strong economic country in a short amount of time. This is why it is vital to say that Seoul; South Korea deserves to be an Asian Mega City.
