Would you rather watch a movie or play video games?I will only be comparing video games and movies from the same genre. Intro/criteria 1: Enjoyment (Hours spent playing the game/watching and overall reaction/experience) Movie: People go the the cinema to enjoy and watch movies starring their favourite actors and even superheroes from comic books. A great movie that embodies the idea of comicbooks is the movie “Kick Ass”. From the beautiful way it is shot, to the amazing acting, there's just something about the movie that makes me want to watch it hundreds of times and admire the creation.
On the other hand you have movies like “Suicide Squad” which degrades the acting of the people performing on the movie with bad editing and flashing colours while sticking a dark filter over the movie. Joe Morgenstern,Wall Street Journal said “ In a word, “Suicide Squad” is trash. In two words, it’s ugly trash. Maybe no more words should be wasted on a movie that is, after all, only a movie, not a natural disaster or a terrorist attack. “ Movies like this degrade the whole genre of the comic book movies and Video game: With video games, you can play hundreds, if not thousands of hours of games because there is so much to do, but that is not always a good thing because it also frustrates people and gives people all different ranges of emotion. Many games appeal to the average person like Fortnite, Call of duty, and even sports games in the 2K franchise which is good because it gets people interested and proves that the gaming industry is not dying.
Graphics do not make a game fun, gameplay makes a game fun. Minecraft is one of the best games that I have ever played but does not have any fancy graphics, it is just blocks and your imagination. I have spend over 1000 hours playing the game with friends, alone, and I have beat it more times than I can count because it is something that I can just relax and enjoy while having tons of fun because in minecraft, you can do anything that you want to. Conclusion: For this category, I am going to have to choose video games because there are just so many times that you can watch a movie until it starts to get boring but for video games, you can spend everyday playing just one game and never get tired of it because there is so much to do. Andy Serkis, Actor said ”Every age has its storytelling form, and video gaming is a huge part of our culture. You can ignore or embrace video games and imbue them with the best artistic quality. People are enthralled with video games in the same way as other people love the cinema or theatre.”
Intro/criteria 2: StoryMovie: The story can be really good in some cases but I have experienced a lot of bad stories in movies and most of them are from the DC cinematic universe. Many of the movies created by the DC franchise are dark, the acting is bad, and the scripts leave many questions and plot holes that are never answered. But if done right, a superhero movie can be a work of art. Thor Ragnarok was a masterpiece compared to the other 2 movies that he starred in. The writers took a shakespeare talking god into a relatable, funny guy who saves the world with the Avengers. It is never too late to save a franchise but if the stories just keep becoming “trash” then you have to change the way you look at the story. The story depends on the person who writes it and it can make the movie like Spider-Man 2, or break the movie like Spider-Man 3. Spider-Man 2 worked because it was the lowest point in Spider-Man's life.
At his lowest point he was broke, no job, failing school, and no powers. But throughout the movie you see the true Peter Parker and the story for the villains creation is even a big part of Peters everyday life because Peter knew Doctor Octavius when he was a good guy trying to save the world. But then there is Spider-Man 3, it is a broken script which is flooded from villain backstory to backstory of which all you see are a cluster of villains just fighting, there is no buildup in the film and which is why the story is not good. Video game: Critics are saying that the new “Spider-Man” game for the PS4 has the greatest story and might be the best Spider-Man movie when watching all the cutscenes and looking at the game progress over time. Lots of games do not have great stories and can make a good movie if written correctly. Chelsea Stark, from The Polygon said “Spider-Man aims for the biggest audience with an accessible roller coaster storyline. It offers the thrill of swinging between astonishingly realistic skyscrapers across an uninterrupted Manhattan skyline, but also relies on relics of open-world gameplay that feel jarring and dated. Its world brims with elaborate set-pieces, and yet, like so many flashy blockbusters, it never quite finds the beat in its heart-pounding action. ” Spider-Man has the potential to be a great movie and is a great video game.
As movies and video games both have stories, it is only as great as the writer so this category is a tie but from the movies and games that I have watched/played,I would have to choose video games because the stories have a certain depth to it which make you more connected to the characters as well as the overall feel of the game.
In conclusion, I could go on and on about how video games and movies fight back and forth to gain the spotlight but in the end they are both great. But video games are better choice when you compare the story and the enjoyment of the two options. I will always watch movies and will continue to see more in my life, at this point in my life, video games take it all.
