I think that I am in both sides. I feel like I technically am a cause of the environmental problem and an inheritor of the environmental crisis. Because there are so many environmental problems going on and since I live in earth, I get affected by those issues and I am technically causing these problems in my everyday life even though I am not doing them on purpose.
In the book “Coming of Age At The End Of Nature”, all of the essays emphasis on the connection between mankind and nature, damaged ecosystem, and how youth generation offer new ways of identifying oneself with nature in a postindustrial world. I agree with this because we are here not to damage our planet but to heal it.
One of the essays on this book written by Bonnie Frye Hemphill, an activist, is “We Are the Fossil-Fuel Freedom Fighters”. In her essay, she mentions how global warming is caused by fossil fuels. Even though I try my best to use renewable resources on my daily life, at some point I use oil, natural gas, fossil fuels which are non-renewable resources. I know that my dad has filters for the factory chimney which is an action to prevent global warming. When we use fuels to produce electricity, or power our cars, we are also releasing toxic carbons into the atmosphere, thus contributing to the greenhouse effect. The increase of greenhouse gases, mainly from the burning of fossil fuels, is trapping more heat in Earth’s systems, what’s commonly known as global warming. This extra heat resulted in higher temperature on land and the oceans, melting ice and more extreme weather.
Last Saturday, I have been to Global Citizen Festival and you have to take actions by sending tweet and signing petitions to actually earn a ticket for it. Global Citizen was more than a festival. It was such a perfect, encouraging event for youth to learn what is going around the world and how they can be a part of the society that tries to help those issues. I believe that they did a great job on raising awareness by giving numerical data of the issues around the world. There were 60,000 people and I think that festivals such as, Global Citizen would be a great way to raise awareness to find solutions to environmental problems such as global warming. We, my generation, need to be educated about sustainable energy technologies that are world-changing.
