“What do you truly desire?” I’ve been asking this question from anyone I can possibly ask for at least a few weeks now. Most of the time the answers I get are somewhere around living with a model to living a luxurious life. A few people have actually depicted the question and answered with what I was looking for. I recently watched a TV Show, Lucifer. Not popular here in Pakistan, but, In the series the devil is shown to be spending some time on Earth because well, as ironic as this sounds, he got bored in Hell. One of the many ‘gifts’ he has been given (in the show) by God is, making people spill out what the truly desire. What they honestly want from life. I find the word desire to be one of the most complicated words in my dictionary.
Per se, In the show, the Devil is shown asking A Night Club owner the same question, what do you truly desire? and to everyone’s surprise, the owner answers with nothing but embarrassment on his face, “I want to break this place down and spend the rest of my years with my wife in peace” The millionaire, in his heart, wanted to tear the place down which made him, and provided him with everything a normal person would wish for! And that people, is what desire is. Frankly, the owner would never really tear the place down or even consider it, but it is what he desires.
My descriptive definition of desire would be something like, The life we want to live but can’t because of fear. I mean that is pretty much the ultimate thing that controls us, right? Coming back to reality, I’ve myself been inspired to ask people what they really want in life. The beautiful thing about each person is that every single one of them has a different story, and thus, they want to live life in completely different ways. Society tends to make us choose the old, rusty and mainstream stairway. A stairway so dull that once you get on it, each step reminds you of what you’re giving up just to make sure people think good about you. Most of us aren’t really living life. We’re just aging. Doing the same thing over and over again until a point comes when we can’t do it anymore. Back when I was in school, I had this friend. The group tried to avoid him just because every time we would sit down and talk about what we want to become when we ‘grow up’, he would bring up his dream of setting up his own food business in the middle of DHA.
An 11-year-old kid, talking about a business? Pfft. I recently met the same friend after 10 years. Where? In an Ice cream parlor, In DHA. Out of instinct, the first thing I asked him was, “What are you up to? You’re in which Engineering college again?” I cannot recreate the expressions on my face that I had that very moment. He said, “Well, I went for BBA, and I’m also surprised that you actually went for something like Engineering, I remember how creative you were back in school. Oh, and I own this place”
