Ever wondered how America became like it is now? Brave men with the leadership of George Washington came together to fight for independence for America, the British. George Washington was an important person in the Revolutionary war because he didn’t back down. Washington led the continental army battle after battle, a big event led by Washington, was the Battle of Trenton. Where he commanded thousands of his cold, tired, men across the Delaware River. They attacked the British allies the Hessians. This was a turning point for the Continental Army. Lastly, Valley Forge was an important moment in the war for the Patriots, Patriots were camped out in Pennsylvania during the winter. However, one man helped the Patriots seem like they still had a chance. His name was Baron Fredrich Wilhelm Von Steuben. Historians argue about which people or events had the most influence on the outcome of the war; these events and people led to the victory of the Patriots in the Revolutionary War.

George Washington was an influential person during the Revolutionary War. Washington led the Continental Army through battles: loses and wins. Washington agreed with the Patriots with taxes and independence. Washington was one of Virginia’s delegates at the first and second Continental Congress. During the second Continental Congress, May, 1775, the delegates appointed Washington to lead the Continental army. According to the world book student, “ Washington, however, provided stalwart and inspiring leadership, even in the worst of times. He had a clear strategy for achieving the patriot’s goal of independence- keep the continental army alive” ( Anderson 24). This bestows, Washington’s commitment to the Continental army. Washington never gave up and persevered even in the hardest times.

The Hessians were an important people that led into an importnat event with the Patriots winning the war, this event brought more than just a victory to the Patriots. It brought confidence. The Hessians were German soldiers, fighting alongside the British. The Hessians services were bought and paid for by King George the lll. On December 26, 1776, Washington led a group of 2,400 soldiers armed with eight cannons, across the Delaware River into Trenton, to attack the Hessians. Washington split his force into two columns. Major, General Nathaniel Greene, attacked from the Northeast. Major, General John Sulivan, attacked from the North. Washington also stationed some of his troops, to prevent Hessians from escaping and to keep reinforcements. But, why did Washington decide to do this attack? Many of Washington’s men: dying of illness, or deciding not to return to the army after their enlistment was over. Because, when the men’s enlistment was up they didn’t want to stay since they’re on the losing side; so they quit. From these problems, Washington was losing men. According to pbs.org, it states “ After marching through the night, Washington’s troops caught the British allied defenders of Trenton by surprise.” From this, the Continental army gained hundreds of Hessians captive, weapons, and resources from the Hessians. This event was not only a victory for the Continental army. It was also a way for the soldiers to gain confidence.

Many people might say that Washington and these events have nothing to do with the Patriots winning the War. However, Washington brought leadership to the Patriots. The battle of Trenton brought the soldiers confidence, and Valley Forge brought the soldiers tactics and practice for the war. If it weren’t for Washington and these events, we might not be what we are today.

Valley Forge Pennslyvania was an important contribution to the war. The soldiers built a camp for shelter for the winter. Washington stayed with his men during the winter of Valley Forge. However, this wasn’t just a vacation from the gruesome battles. Instead, the winter went on getting worse every day. Soldiers were dying left and right, from illness, starvation, and disease. Despite the soldiers dying, hunger, and tiredness. Military adviser Frederick von Steuben kept the soldiers busy with drills and training in modern military strategy. With this, it helped the soldiers prepare for battles. They learned how to properly handle their weapons, tactics, and discipline. According to the History channel “When Washington’s army marched out of Valley Forge on June 19, 1778, the men were better disciplined and stronger in spirit than when they had entered. Nine days later, they won a victory against the British under Lord Cornwallis at the Battle of Monmouth in New Jersey” Hence, Vally Forge was a big contribute the Patriots winning the war.
