Traditionally ,faith in addition to reason have been put across in different ways of which culture and religion have a silver lining that separates them from each other. Looking at culture and religion, they could both work hand in hand or either against each other. This can only be defined with the rules or laws imprinted in their books that contain the different styles of living for the groups. With all the above said ,the idea of free speech is already facing a risk of being oppressed.
The idea of oppression becomes present due to people avoiding offending other ethnic groups through speech and by doing this the truth is held in from society Politicians, celebrities and other world leaders have different ethnic beliefs. Whether be it christianity, buddhism or islam, their set of laws apply depending with their ethnic groups. For example most countries are labeled due to the majority of the most popular ethnic group. U.S.A , “in God we trust”, Christians. Iran, “Salam alaikum” Islam.
A majority of a country's laws are set in accordance to the dominance of its ethnic groups. This usually eliminates the idea of free speech in debates amongst people and creates conflict amongst groups of people.
With the possibilities of conflict already in existence, you find people trying their best not to offend the different groups and this limits them from fully expressing their thoughts on world wide situations. World leaders are mainly known for trying to avoid conflicts and the idea of opposing peoples’ qualities of living might be seen as an act of war. There are so many world problems right now, and most of them have not been tackled due to what people believe in.
Recent studies show that there are countries in which women are oppressed and not treated equally to men. After looking at the world map you get to see that most countries have women oppressed are the ones with big religious groups and it’s amazing to see how that’s seen as acceptable in their books of religion and Law. Recent studies by Amnesty international show that the UN estimated an approximate number of five thousand women that face murder each year as a result of honor killing.
The number today is still debated to be higher in the Middle east and Southeast Asia. Free speech deserves people who look into the reality of things without really using any cultural or religious thoughts in their debates. Usually in debates, religious examples or attributes are abolished and this is to try get people to fully express their thoughts without really thinking of the end results as unfair to themselves due to religion.
There are an estimated 10,000 distinct religions worldwide. Studies show that about 84% of the world's population is made from large religious groups such as Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism or forms of folk religion. Looking at the number of religions, you get a rough idea of how ethics play a huge role in decision making throughout history and how opinions are bound to differ amongst people.
Not only do these religions exist, but they also have a set of rules that the groups have to follow. For example the ten commandments set in the bible for the christian group to follow. Now with this obtained Knowledge, I decided to extract my real life situation from an ara news article, which talked about members of the islamic state choosing to stone four rape victims to death for “committing adultery” on the 12th of february 2016. So within the islamic law, if a woman somehow tempts a men to rape her then the lady is at fault and therefore must be punished. The woman does not get a chance to defend or clear her name on the incident. For this event to be noticed, 4 male muslims should've been there and act as witnesses of the actions to approve the acts in court. The four victims were stoned to death and there was no action taken upon the male rapists. With the actions and rules set by the Islams, or rules in the Quran.
This article is clear evidence of bias within ISIS. This made me question the effects different religions have on our lives and whether the rules set are always ethical or not, not only do I question the role of ethics in religion but in addition it questions women's rights. With all this said, I would like to introduce my knowledge question to you all what is “what roles do faith and language/bias play in mis-interpreting religious knowledge systems”.
