Why and How New Zealand Should Deal with Sexual Offenders

In 2002, New Zealand schools began screening anyone who had access to the school in any way, even the people that cut the grass at the school. One landscaper was forced to resign when the checks found numerous convictions of crimes against kids. Schools are working to protect students as much as they can. Some argue that kid’s vulnerability lies in their abundance of freedom, that it makes them easy targets for predators. There is also concern that children are communicating with paedophile predators on their phones. Even though the likelihood of a child being victimized by a predator is very rare, it’s still every parent’s worst nightmare.

There is an abundance of internet predators that are online, trading and sharing massive amounts of child pornography. As police are using more sophisticated means of hunting them, these predators are themselves becoming more and more sophisticated in their ways of obtaining material while maintaining anonymity. There was even a case of several teens who were investigated for possession of child pornography. The public was worried that if the children were not treated properly. That they would grow up to be predators.

Concerns for mentally ill people in New Zealand are beginning to crop up. People are worried about the fact that mentally ill individuals have an increased risk of being attacked by a predator. Prostitutes now named as predators as well, due to the inherent predatory aspect of prostitution. This comes along with the naming of new types of predators; drug-sex predators and drug-rape predators.

Muslim men are oft thought of as predators or oppressors of Muslim women. Yet, these women themselves outwardly say that these men are not predators unto them.

Many argue that New Zealand is not properly equipped to deal with mentally ill predators within their borders. Policemen say that they are aware of predators stalking New Zealand neighbourhoods, yet they didn’t stop them. Once predators are released, they move back into homes in the community. On one occasion, neighbours were furious that they were not notified of the child sex predator moving into a house near them. Many live in fear of the released predators, they’re concerned over where he will live. Many community members say that predators should be locked up for life, that way they have no chance to reoffend. One predator set for early release boasted to a friend about his plans to reoffend, thus the plans to cut his sentence were ceased immediately.

A number of teachers have been outed and subsequently convicted for being child sex predators. One man who was flagged as a predator years ago was allowed to be a teacher even though he was a known child predator. There was another teacher who instead of preying on his students, he preyed on runaway teenage boys. Children have reported that they’re scared to report their encounters with predators. They fear getting in trouble if they tell their parents or authorities, so they hide their victimization.

One doctor claims that very few sexual predators are a risk to the public at large. This is because most sexual predators will prey on family members. This knowledge of offending should make it easier to rehabilitate these sex offenders. These few that are a risk to the public as a whole often materialize in authority positions. Like the golf coach that was convicted of raping two young girls early in his career.

Sexual grooming was criminalized in an attempt to prevent predators from attacking. The passage of these laws made it possible to charge predators before they even attack. This new route of prosecuting criminals sparked a number of articles in support of the new laws.

Though of as a horrendous predator, yet was eventually released from prison. He had a home moved onto prison grounds, but was still free. Many people in the community argued against his freedom, saying he was still a predator. He expressed his desire to socialize with the community, especially women.
