When you hear the word pets the first few that would fine to mind would be a dog, cat, goldfish or even a rabbit. Some persons may decide to have a not so common pet like a tiger, spider or even an elephant. Pets have become a usual thing in most humans’ lives today. But normally when we think of pets two of the most common pets that would come to mind are cats and dogs. Some persons love both as pets some may prefer one over the other like me for example I prefer dogs over cats which is why today I'll be explaining and discussing with you Why dogs are better pets than cats.. Most home owners prefer dogs as pets over cats because they are considered perfect pet because of their unique qualities for example they like to have fun, they adapt to change, easy to control and train and they also have great potential. Dogs also can protect you and they also promote an active lifestyle and are capable of much more than cats and lastly dogs are mans’ best friend.
Dogs are said to have unique qualities which help them make us happy as pet owners. Dogs love to have fun, there’s only so much fun you can have with a cat. Cats like to play with string toys and will try to catch the red dot wherever it goes, sure the cat is having fun but are you. Dogs love to play, and it's often interactive play that they want, meaning they want to play with you. You can play fetch with a ball or a disc. You can enjoy an exciting tug-of-war session. You can play chase in the yard. If your dog gets along well with other dogs, you can even set up a doggie "playdate" with other dogs, just make sure both dogs are healthy and will get along.
Dogs adapt quickly to their environment and different scenarios. Cats are usually a bit more sensitive to their environments while dogs tend to accept change more easily, at least when their owners act like it's no big deal. Of course, there are plenty of neurotic and fearful dogs out there, but as a species, they're often calmer in the face of significant alterations to their lifestyles.
When it comes to introducing new people, pets or items to your home or moving to a new house, cats generally need more time to adapt. They don't automatically trust that all is well. They want proof first. Most dogs take their cues from their owners. If you're cool and calm when faced with that new baby comes in your door, chances are that your dog will be, too. Of course, protective breeds might not be quite as accepting of strangers.
While being super adaptive they are also easier to control than cats. Try to control a cat and you might hear the tiny sound of kitty laughter. Most cats will go where they want to go, jump where they want to jump, scratch where they want to scratch, and mark whatever they think needs marking. Then there are those hairballs which can become quite a mess. Don’t get me wrong though, I’m not saying that dog are not destructive or don’t cause a lot of destruction but it’s generally easier to train a dog and keep him and you house safe and secure while you’re away.
According to Cat protection a cat magazine, cat lovers admit that cats are rather difficult to train and keep in check. While on the other had dogs enjoy training, it seems to give them a sense of purpose. To them it can be viewed as a job, and most dogs love work. Plus many dogs are easily and highly motivated by food and attention. Anyone who has a dog or has experience with a dog knows that a dog will do almost anything for food, I’m not saying it will fly or do backflips like some super gymnast but you get what I mean. Dogs often act out because they are bored. Maybe they need to go for a walk or just need some attention.
Dogs are capable of great things and they show a lot of potential. Sometimes they surprise with the things that they do. When's the last time you saw a cat in a vest working hard to help people? It's true that cats have a place in animal-assisted therapy, but they're generally not suited to other types of work. Dogs have been helping people just about as long as they've been on earth. They were working on farms as herders and drovers hundreds of years ago.
Today, many dogs still work on farms, and they can do so much other things such as: service dogs, guiding the blind, assisting the handicapped, helping the police and military, participating in search-and-rescue efforts and comforting the sick. Some dogs can even detect seizures and sniff out cancer. That’s a huge advantage they have which make cats seem like a lesser species compared to them.
One of the most important abilities and characteristics that we all know about in dogs is that they protect us. It's not in a cat's nature to defend your home or you. Cats are more likely to run and hide when faced with trouble, but most dogs will instinctively protect their owners and their territory. They'll bark or growl to alert you to the presence of strangers, and many will even ward off intruders. Dogs can sense our fear and they'll respond if they think we feel threatened.
A large dog with a loud bark may seem like the better watchdog, but small dogs are sometimes even more alert when it comes to detecting outside noises. The little ones may not be able to physically fight off intruders, but they'll certainly alert you about the danger. And many would-be intruders will avoid contact with any dog for fear of being bitten, no matter what the dogs’ size.
Dog also promote a healthy and active lifestyle, Cats stay home and do their own thing, or they go out and do their own thing. Some people have been known to walk their cats through the neighborhood on harnesses, but that's not something that usually happens.
Dogs need a lot of exercise, just like people. We can even make them part of our own exercise routines. Most dogs love to go on walks. Many enjoy running with their owners. Some can be trained to run alongside a bike. They can participate in dog sports like flyball, disc and diving. Dog sports are great for fulfilling a dog's need for mental and physical exercise.
Dogs are capable of doing so much more than cats which help us today for example:
Lastly, the term "man's best friend" exists for a good reason. Dogs have been domesticated for at least 15,000 years, although some historians think it may be longer. Dogs have been the faithful companions and loyal helpers of the human race throughout history. The bond between humans and dogs is unmistakable.
Owning a cat isn't really that much different from not owning a cat. They're haughty, they're temperamental and most of the time they act like you don't exist. On the other hand, dogs are loyal, cuddly, goofy and best of all, love you no matter what. You can play fetch with a ball or a disc. You can enjoy an exciting tug-of-war session. You can play chase in the yard. If your dog gets along well with other dogs, you can even set up a doggie 'playdate' with another pup - just make sure both dogs are healthy and will get along. Plus dogs are bred to be service dogs, and that helps people a lot I mean do you see service cats didn't think so. This was seen more in dogs that they looked back to the humans for assistance whereas the cats did little to nothing to cue the humans for assistance. Simple operational conditioning can train most animals. This could prove despite their higher intelligence, why cats are less obedient. Cats seem to know that they were once worshiped as gods. Perhaps they resent the fact those days have ended. They may still be holding it against us.
I think it's fair to say that a dog's owner is the center of his universe. A cat is the center of its own universe. We humans are merely orbiting servants willing servants, of course.
To conclude I would like to point out though, no matter how many cats or cat lovers there may be, no cat has ever been or could ever be called "man's best" friend. No cat could ever have that much potential as that of a dog. No cat could ever do those amazing things a dog can do.
