If I were eligible to vote, I would vote for the New Democratic Party, or NDP. As we discussed in class, the NDP follows a socialist ideology, placing them left-wing on the political spectrum. Although the activity we did in class places me more towards the centre of the spectrum, upon further analysis, I do agree with many of the NDP views. One of their policies that I personally agree with is their promise to develop a "green economy" and invest in new jobs and transition programs for the sector. This is a decision I strongly support, as climate change and global warming have been rising rapidly in recent years.
Developing a low-carbon (“green”) economy will stall climate change. Investing in job creation in the sector will make sure the economy remains stable, and citizens formerly working in sectors revolving around less-green solutions can still contribute to the economy. Another policy I support is the modification of the first-past-the-post electoral system into a mixed-member proportional representation.
As we’ve discussed in class, the first-past-the-post system is not an efficient system for electing a representative government. In comparison, the mixed-member system is much more efficient and representative of the entire governed population. This means I would have a greater chance of getting the politician of my choice in any election, and I could vote without thinking strategically.
A last point I support is the reduced/tuition-free post-secondary education. Post-secondary education is a necessity for employment in the modern age, but rising tuition fees have made it hard for students to obtain an education past secondary school. Those who do obtain said education fall into debt early upon entering the workforce. Currently, the NDP plans to assist provincial governments in reducing post-secondary tuition fees, and two of the four NDP candidates voiced their support of tuition-free post-secondary education during leader elections. Those two did not get elected as leaders, however their views are still prominent within the NDP. This means current leader Jagmeet Singh could very well fulfill this upon entering office. As a student who plans to obtain post-secondary education, this could be exceptionally beneficial to me, as I plan to obtain a PhD.
To conclude, if I were of legal age to vote, I would vote for the New Democratic Party (NDP). My vote would be entitled to the party due to three strong policies of their campaign platform: their promise to develop a green economy while investing in new jobs in said economy, their decision to modify the first-past-the-post electoral system with a system of equal representation, and their policy to reduce/remove tuition fees for post-secondary education.
