As time rapidly passes by we come to a point in our lives where change has become inevitable. Humans have learned to adapt to drastic changes whether it be climate change, technology, or life itself. Change in our world has made it both difficult and easy for the millennial generation or in other words “teenagers”. Being a teenager myself, I will be speaking on behalf of what I believe to be the various challenges and privileges of being a teenager and why i like being a teenager - these themes will be explored in the essay.
Millennials are constantly accused and labeled as being a “spoiled generation”. The advanced use of technology are one of the biggest factors. Older generations frown upon our misuse of technology and behavior. Being a teen is extremely difficult because with the privilege of technology, comes the possibility of various social issues and harm to minors. It is easy for someone to portray as someone on the internet and in reality be a completely different person. Situations like this have led to child trafficking, rape, cyberbullying, depression and even death, with the main target being teenagers. As minors we have to be aware of everything we say, post, and be careful with who we speak to online. As millennials the judgment of our behavior is tested every day. As a young African American teen I too am constantly judged, this is because of the actions that others my age have made. Unfortunately the negative behavior of one person automatically creates an image for those in the same color, gender and/or age group.
This makes it incredibly difficult for teenagers to be taken seriously. Just because my fellow peers act a certain way does not mean that elders should have the right to assume that we are all the same.
Although being a teenager nowadays has its challenges, it also has its incentives. It is understandable that our generation has changed the world in many ways, but the change has overall made such a positive impact. Technology for example, before our generation technology was progressing at an extremely slow rate. Now , not only have cell phones that are basically computers , but also gadgets that assist with everyday life such as navigation systems , smart vehicles , smart homes , and even robots! The millennial generation has made the world tech savvy. I believe that teenagers are the future. Not only in technology but also in social reformation. So many of us want to see change and we are doing whatever it takes to make that change happen. The best part of being a teen in this era is the fact that we are the reason for so many amazing and brilliant events and ideas that have been made. The millennial generation is full of innovators and that is wow I am extremely proud of being one.
As the years continue to pass there will be other generations that follow. My advice to them would be to be careful with any decision and any person that they encounter online and to continue to strive for success because as long as you surround yourself with people who share the same goals and ambition as you, you will definitely go far in life. Being a teenager has its ups and downs but overall I wouldn’t have it any other way.
