What could possibly influence someone to commit a violent crime? Are people born criminals? These questions that continuously flow through my mind are why I want to study criminology. Within criminology I see an inspiring and adaptable vocation, however, what I love most is its ability to combine all aspects of human life including psychology and sociology. Throughout the years my interest within criminology and the criminal mind mainly peaked from reading being my main hobby and using it as an escape and distraction from home life. Mystery and crime books were always my first choice because of the ability to never be boring, I also found this while studying criminology at A-Level.
The book “All that remains” by Sue Black gives an interesting insight into professions dealing with the criminal mind which encouraged me to find enjoyment in studying criminology and look forward to learning further in university. Being able to find a subject that gave me the motivation to study was a new and gratifying feeling. A certain crime story that first fascinated me was Harold Shipman a famous UK serial killer. While doing independent research I came across many ideas of what could cause someone to commit such crimes. An idea that I found fascinating was John Pollard’s statement about Harold Shipman which was that he simply… enjoyed the feeling of control over life and death. I am currently studying criminology, sociology, and religious studies at A-Level. I feel that these three subjects directly link with my interest in our society and how it affects people around us.
Being able to study criminology so far has made me firmly realize my enthusiasm for the subject, while also driving my passion even deeper. During college I have developed many new skills that I think can be carried on to university. All three of my subjects are essay based, teaching me the importance of independent research, critical thinking as well as written communication skills. Welsh back has given me the opportunity to learn independently studying knife crime in the UK. This meant I had to use organizational skills, statistic analysis skills, and time management to ensure I handed in my work within the time constraints as well as let me delve deeper into an area that interests me.
In 2018, during my final year at school, I was chosen as a prefect. This role gave me many responsibilities such as offering help and guidance to other pupils, particularly younger pupils. I often helped with events that the school held, such as open evenings for new students. Being given this experience helped to develop my leadership skills and massively improved my confidence, which I hope to put to practice at university as I will have to adapt to a new exciting environment. Also, during my final year at school, I had the opportunity to volunteer at a local charity shop raising funds for the RSPCA. This fulfilling experience meant that I developed skills that perhaps aren’t available in an academic environment, this included, listening and communication skills along with this being able to help a charity also enabled me to use my empathy skills naturally.
Overall, coming from a working-class family has meant that I’ve had to mature perhaps faster than children from different circumstances. However, it has also encouraged me to be a more determined and dedicated student so that I can prove to myself and others that no matter the social class, hard work can and will pay off. Therefore, I always encourage the way of thinking that there are always new opportunities to learn and grow as a student, the most vital thing holding curiosity in the simple act of listening. I have the aspiration to be accepted on this course generally because I believe learning has no restraints and I plan to take the challenges of a new environment first-hand. I strive to plunge into criminology, to finally help me to reach my academic goals and future aims.
