Why I Want to Study Nursing

My interest in health and social care has started back in my childhood and I believe that a practitioner degree in the healthcare field would bring me a great sense of personal and professional satisfaction and fulfilment. I always had a genuine desire to help and support people affected by different health conditions or simply to improve their well-being and that need drove me to apply for this course.

I consider myself an ideal candidate to study nursing because I easily embrace the values of the NHS Constitutions and the 6Cs in my daily life, and I am a compassionate, committed, and motivated individual, always willing to provide care and support to everyone in need for.

I believe that my academic studies and work experience helped me develop a variety of transferable skills that I can apply to my nursing practice and makes me a suitable candidate for this course. During high- school I have studied theology, a field that made me aware of the human behaviour and the importance of mental and spiritual well-being of the individuals, specifically during challenging times and increased my sense of compassion, ethic, and empathy in relation with them. Therefore, I consider these skills crucial in establishing a good relationship with the patients, create a positive care experience, and provide an appropriate treatment plan according to their health conditions.

Moreover, as specified in my CV, I possess a degree in ‘Business Management’ and I have been working as a manager in the hospitality industry for the last four years. Thus, during my academic studies and work experience, I have developed valuable skills that will be beneficial for my future academic studies and career as a nurse. As a manager, working with people from different backgrounds, either customers or co-workers, I have learned to be able to deal with challenging situations and behaviours, find quick solutions for urgent issues, be responsible for my decisions and remain calm and professional while under pressure. Also, the experience I have achieved in customer service and communication skills I possess will play a significant role in communicating with compassion and help to improve patients’ well-being and deliver high-quality care.

My aim with this course is to gain medical knowledge and experience through practice, new skills, and values, which combined with the ones I already possess will create the perfect blend in order to pursue my dream of becoming a healthcare professional. As our contemporary society is always in need of people who care for good health and well-being of others, I would like to take this opportunity to become one of those who create a healthier community for everyone.
