He also was the direct author of the quote “Communication – the human connection – is the key to personal and career success”, of course, you have only heard that quote a hundred times. “Communication is key” additionally you’ve this one maybe a couple thousand times as well. Why are these statements repeating our whole lives? And why do they all have communication in them? Here is a simple answer, rhetorical thinking. Thinking and speaking in such ways where you must pick and choose how, who, where, and why you must say what you are going to say. Communication using rhetoric is of upmost value in our lives today, this is the kind of communication that we must utilize to obtain a certain goal no matter the medium used.
An example of a rhetorical situation faced this week was posting my Organizing Services ad on Facebook. Of course, this may seem a bit trifling but let me just say it was the longest time I’ve ever spent creating a post in my entire life. The reason I say this is because the purpose of my post was to attract as well as persuade anyone in public that may be interested in my services; however, being a college student means immediately having no credibility to strangers who may see this ad, unless of course I prove my ethos on my own. The context of my ad had to be sturdy and robust. After all I was competing against thousands upon thousands of other business ads as well; I had to stand out and hold my own. My ad was made using a confident and informative tone, also showing readers that their best interest was my top priority. Needless to say, I received 20 personal messages in a matter of one week; rhetorical communication pays off immensely.
My second encounter facing a rhetorical situation was when I went car shopping. Many people assume this is the worse shopping experience they’ve ever dealt with, while others, like myself, find it one of the easiest shopping times yet. My salesman chose to communicate over messaging, with that instated, the impression he would perceive made a huge impact on how he thought of me as a buyer. He was my only audience, so that made it easier to narrow down how I chose to communicate through my medium of messaging. My context was important because it showed the salesman how serious I was as a car buyer. My tone had to stay determined yet urgent so that he knew my time was of the essence. My stance remained credible seeing that I did a large amount of research on the range of vehicles best respecting my standards. Car shopping from my perspective was a giant process of elimination; eliminating the cars I did want and the ones that were definitely out of my range was fairly simple. While proactively using rhetorical thinking, I purchased my first vehicle as well as meeting a great salesman mentor for my future purchases.
Lastly, this is a rhetorical situation I encounter daily. Requesting documents from vendors and customers. This procedure is relatively simple yet very crucial to what my job consists of as an administrative secretary. This situation requires me to request key documents needed for projects in a demanding time frame. I do my task using only a medium of e-mail. Writing my context, I must be sure to stay professional, benevolent, impartial, yet a pinch of demanding to meet the expectations of corporate responses. I remain credible by insinuating my knowledge of all companies while overseeing any details of the requested documents. Every time is a success, I receive the documents as well as a message of gratitude.
These examples I have given are only three tiny examples of rhetorical situations encountered in a week incomparable to the other daily situations in every other person’s life. I am now concluding with this favorable quote, “Communication is key.” It is incredibly viable to approach every situation rhetorically whether it seems necessary or not. I can assure you rhetorical thinking is always necessary and always a success.
