How is the world we live in a Feed-like world? M.T Anderson helps us discover that through feelings, actions and organizational power, the world of Feed is very similar to the world we live in. Before providing any background information to my claim, I’d like to make it inherently clear that the point I’m trying to make here is M.T Anderson’s characters and plot in the world of Feed resembles our own world. Understandably, the point I’m trying to make can be argued against with different opinions; but the exploration and defense of my point I am arguing will be made clear through various examples. To briefly give some background information, the narrator Titus and his two 'bro friends' Marty and Link are like your typical college student in comparison to our world. The Feed is in reference to an attachment to the human body that provides advanced Internet and social media access that a large percentage of the population in the Feed-like world possess. With background information on Feed by M.T Anderson, the argument I’m making in regards to the world we live in being like the Feed-like world will make better sense.
The first example of how M.T Anderson shows the Feed-like world to be like our world is the use of the feeling of “boredom”. It becomes clear that Titus, Marty and Link get bored easily just like any other kid in our own world today. For them, there short form of entertainment was “playing with three uninstalled wires that were coming out of the wall. We were trying to ride shocks off them”. A typical kid in our world would get bored easily and move onto the next form of entertainment as well. Titus, Marty and Link seem to do this a few times, and at one point Marty even invents a new game to fend off the boredom called 'Struggle of the Dying Warrior'. You may be thinking, how does a feeling such as boredom resemble our own world? In simple terms, Titus, Marty and Link are exhibiting a feeling that nearly every single person in our world has experienced at least once. It may seem like a minor comparison but it’s important to know that people in the Feed-like world experience feelings just like us. Also the feeling of loneliness that Titus experiences resembles what most people in our world have probably felt at one point or another. We learn that Titus is lonely because he has not had a girlfriend in a while, so he has the urge to connect with someon. I personally have a friend that like Titus, is lonely and wants to meet a girl. Luckily though Titus does meet an attractive 'unette' named Violet (and later Quendy), which I'm sure my friend from my own world will also do in good time. The feeling of loneliness is just another example of how certain feelings connect our world to the Feed-like world. Like us, characters in the world of Feed exhibit feelings that people in our world have to deal with on a daily basis. Another example of how the world of Feed resembles our own world is when Titus, Marty and Link take a group spring break trip to the moon. There is an inclination to take action when young and travel to various places and Titus, Marty and Link just do just that.
I personally went on a week-long spring break trip to Disney world with a few friends last year because we (like Titus, Marty and Link) wanted to take a break from our boring dull lives. This action to take a last minute trip to the moon resembles how the younger demographic in our world normally acts as well. Every trip I’ve planned with my friends has been very last minute. Some trips, like Titus, Marty and Links trip to the moon have not been that fun but some have been as well. M.t Anderson has clearly touched on feelings that were felt by characters and actions that play a role in the plot of Feed; these feelings felt and actions exhibited are how the world we live can be compared to the Feed-like world. Lastly, the world of Feed resembles our own world by introducing an organization called The Global Alliance. The Global Alliance exhibits acts of terrorism and war against the United States because of the poor American environmental management. Plain and simple the Global Alliance resembles an organization in our own world called ISIS. Currently, ISIS is a terrorist organization that is also giving the U.S. a hard time. To understand the comparison of The Global Alliance and ISIS the bigger picture must be looked at.
The world of Feed just like the world we live in is experiencing attacks from different organizations not limited to just ISIS. M.T Anderson made it very clear the Feed-like world is not perfect, they just like us experience various confrontation from outside powers.
