He was originally born William Jefferson Blythe III, named after his father, to Virginia Cassidy Blythe and William Jefferson Blythe Jr. Clinton was born shortly after his father died in a car accident. At the age of four, Clinton was left with his grandmother, Edith Cassidy, while his mother studied to pursue her profession.

Clinton’s grandparents ran a small store in a mostly African-American neighborhood. His mother and his grandmother both made it their mission to shape his character, teaching him to be an early leader. His mother was usually in New Orleans pursuing her studies, so his grandmother is he person who predominantly raised him. In the 1950’s, when Bill Clinton was eight years old, his mother remarried to Roger Clinton, who worked as a car dealer. Along with a new step father, Bill had a new half-brother as well, Roger Jr. After the marriage, the family moved to Hot Springs, Arkansas. At the age of 15, Bill changed his name to William Jefferson Clinton in an attempt to show solidarity to his stepfather. Roger Clinton was an alcoholic, and he and Bill’s mother had violent arguments regularly. During this period, Clinton acted as a mediator for his mother and stepfather, breaking up their fights.

In high school, Bill was very bright, and had an obvious passion for politics. In the small town, he was known as a young man with ambition and passion for the things he was interested in. Clinton’s high school principal, Johnnie Mae Mackey, mentored him and it was from her guidance that he was sent to Washington D.C. to become an Arkansas delegate of Boy’s Nation. During his time in Boy’s Nation, Bill met current president John F. Kennedy, and is photographed shaking his hand in the White House Rose Garden. Clinton’s mother always believed he would become the future President of the United States, and after that handshake, he was certain that he would prove her prediction right. Clinton later moved out of Arkansas to go to college at Georgetown University in Washington D.C. It was there that he majored in International Affairs. As a college student, Clinton was very committed to the movement against the Vietnam War. He was also very committed to the civil rights movement, as well. He served as the class president for his freshman and sophomore classes, but lost the election in his junior year due to looking too political for his peers. At the beginning of his junior year, he worked in the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee as a clerk. Just before his graduation from Georgetown in 1968, Bill was awarded with a prized Rhodes scholarship to study abroad at Oxford University in England for two years. He graduated from Georgetown with a B.S. in International Affairs.

In 1970, Clinton went back to school at Yale, where he later met his future wife, Hillary Rodham, who was a fellow law student. After their graduation in 1973, the two were offered jobs on the staff of the House of Representatives committee that was considering impeaching the president at the time, Richard Nixon. Bill turned down the offer and returned to Arkansas, going on to begin teaching Law at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville. In 1974, Clinton ran for a seat in The U.S. House of Representatives against Republican John Paul Hammerschmidt. He lost the election, being beaten by only 51.1 percent of the votes. The same year, Hillary Rodham moved to Fayetteville, and she and Clinton married in 1975. In 1976, Clinton was voted state attorney general.

Then, in 1978, at age 32, Clinton was elected governor and won by a landslide. At the time, he was the youngest governor elected to date. However, due to his youth and his lack of experience, the citizens of Arkansas were not as impressed as he had hoped. Because of this, in the next election he was beaten out by his opponent. In the time he was out of office, he worked on campaigning for reelection. During this time, he and Hillary had their first daughter Chelsea Clinton, who was born on February 27th of that year. In the 1982 race for Governor of Arkansas he won, and got elected again in 1984. He stayed in office until 1990. The next year, in 1991, Clinton announced that he would run for president. He won the 1992 election against President George H. W. Bush. He served as a democratic president from 1993 to 2001, serving two terms in office. Clinton served alongside Al Gore, who served the country as Vice President. During his presidency, Bill Clinton enacted many domestic legislation acts, such as the Medical Family Leave act and the Violence Against Women act. Along with these, he worked on many other bills that were focused on gun violence and crime, the environment, welfare reform, and education. Clinton also attempted to enact universal health insurance for all Americans, but many people such as the healthcare industry and republicans opposed, and Congress evidently failed to act upon the bill.

During his two terms, Clinton did many good things for the country, but the peace ended abruptly when on December 19th, 1998, Congress impeached him for an alleged affair he had with a White House intern. However, on February 12th, 1999, the charges against Clinton were acquitted and he remained in office to finish the term. Bill Clinton’s presidency was very much influenced by John F. Kennedy, who inspired him to work towards pursuing politics. After Clinton and the rest of his family left the white house, Bill continued to stay very active in his public life, starting the William J. Clinton foundation to combat poverty, disease, and other issues that plague the United States and the rest of the world. In 2004, the William J. Clinton Presidential Center in Park in Little Rock, Arkansas was opened, and in the same year Clinton released his best selling autobiography, “My Life.” Clinton now resides in Chappaqua, New York with his wife, Hillary Rodham Clinton. He worked actively with Hillary during her presidential campaign in 2016.
