Addonizio's poem “What do women want?”, she demonstrates what do women want, women definitely want some equality, justice and freedom to be who they want to be in their lives. In the beginning of the poem, Addonizio address her views of the red dress, “I want a red dress. / I want it flimsy and cheap, / I want it too tight, I want to wear it / until someone tears it off me.” (1-4).
Throughout these lines of the red dress, Addonizio shows a direct and transparent poem that focuses on the desire of one particular woman, the woman, to purchase and wear a red dress, really shows the key for true expression of who she actually is. This poem is a straightforward demand for a dress, but it must fit her criteria, it must be flimsy and cheap she wants a dress that looks expensive but a poor person like her could buy. Although a red dress it would stick out in the public, also the cheap dress express she also wants to be part of the same crowd, like one of the common people.
The red dress later becomes a metaphor, that symbolizes of the woman’s free expression and power. Also for her to purchase the dress it really shows who she really is. In her poem “What do women want,” Addonizio continues to talk about the desire of the red dress that the women want. Addonizio starts off again of I wants line in her poem, “I want to talk like I’m the only / woman on earth and I can have my pick. / I want that red dress bad. (14-16). The phrase for “I want that red dress bad” (16), gives a hint of she is an impatient person. I can tell that she doesn’t want to be a normal person anymore, she is tired of waiting being one it comes to a point that, she has no thoughts or care for anyone or anything unless she herself is in.
Because of many years of struggles, she did not have the opportunity being able to express herself. Near end of the poem the dress became like a suit for radical change, as she got the chance carrying it on her. Now she can free herself and she will be able to experience her life now, love, birth and death. The woman may be frustrated because of her wants are not yet satisfied for her still havent found that red dress that fits her criteria, that symbol of confidence and passion.
