Introduction

Victorian era was important time in the literature of England, it was changing period. Charlotte Bronte as a female writer was one of famous and important persons in the world of literature. Many readers admired charlotte Bronte's works that were well known and popular. She was a representer for women and she mentioned in her novel Jane Eyre how English society treated women in the 19th century. Her writings were about women, for women and written by woman. Her works emphasized on the role of women in England during revolution of industry. Jane Eyre which written by charlotte Bronte is one of the most important literature heroines. It is a work that represented England of victoria concentrating on a feminist view.

This novel showed the picture of the women in the society of England in the 19th century when there were many struggles for women to be happy. And she helped them to know the life meaning and to obtain their identities.

Charlotte Bronte is one of the most well-known female writers. She was born on 21 April 1816 in England. Her father is Irish and her mother is Cornish. She lived a tragedy life. Her works (poems and novels) achieved great success and remain popular for two hundred years after her lifetime. Jane Eyre was published on 19th October 1847.

About the novel

Jane Eyre is the novel that has power and popularity to focus on the side of the women's position in their society. Many reviewers revised the novel from different points of view. Jane Eyre was a romantic novel that featuring one of the most important heroine in the literature. It was chosen as one of the greatest novels in the 19th century by researchers. It was an autobiography of charlotte Bronte. Many researchers did researches on Jane Eyre; they received it from prospective of women's position in the 19th century and the relation between charlotte Bronte and Jane Eyre. There are many issues in this novel like poverty, loneliness of Jane and struggles, but in this research we focused on women's role in the novel.

Jane Eyre is a poor orphan but have courage. She passed through hardship life to save her status as a housekeeper in the house of her employer, Mr. Rochester.

She has a nature of wit and challenge and met Mr. Rochester with his sardonic nature. They both enrolled in a deep relation, but Rochester's secret from the past threatened his hope with his only love. It was an unexpected love story that viewed romantic fiction that could end the fight of the women for her independence in that society.

What kind of novel it was? It was a novel that was written about the life story of her writer. Her difficult journey through her life represented by the heroine. The account was believable so it could attract the reader.

The major issue was a gender issue, at all levels of the life of Jane Eyre passing from her childhood , her imprisonment by John Read authority to her second imprisonment under the influence of Mr. Brochlehurst and her third imprisonment in Thornfield where she knew a new type of prisons that was marriage.

At last Jane become strong independent woman. The novel explains how her struggle was in society that refused equality of women to men. It showed how was the progress of marriage from inequality to equality, but reality that marriage of equality was present or not, this is the question.

To be mother, to give her husband the pleasure and to be dependent, that was women's role in society of victoria. Despite focusing on independence all through the novel, Jane finally see herself in doubted equality position.

The role of women in Jane Eyre

Bronte portrayed free, independent and strong woman through Jane Eyre. She struggled for freedom in a world full of many problems. She took an oath to be equipped with confidence to be able to face life. She could explain how personal morals are the best indicator for personality, class comes later.
