My name is Tianjiao Yang, RN, BSN. I would like to apply to the UCLA Master’s Family Nurse Practitioner program. I completed my BSN from the University of Kentucky (UK) in May 2013 and I am currently an RN working for UK Healthcare in a Level 1 Trauma Center. The reason why I am applying to this program is to ultimately become an Advanced Practice Nurse working for the Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) or to be a part of an international rescue team. This program is paramount to helping me achieve this dream.
On May 12th, 2008, I experienced a huge earthquake in my hometown of Sichuan. The official figures stated that nearly 400,000 people died and nearly 70,000 were injured. It was a heartbreaking time for me; I was eighteen and I could not do anything to help. My parents and I left town to stay in the countryside, where we watched the news every day. The only information we could get was the rising number of deaths. So many people died in the earthquake. They were doctors, teachers, farmers, and workers who would no longer have a chance to contribute to society. Since then, I have been thinking about what I can do for others and for society. Moreover, after the earthquake we got lots of help from other countries’ rescue teams; we really appreciated all their help and I so admired their professional and effective work. This gave me the idea of becoming part of a medical team.
The other reason why I want to become a family nurse practitioner for the Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) or to be a part of an international rescue team is I would like to be a bridge to make a connection for people from different cultural background. When I was young, I used to travel in different countries with my family. We went to Japan, South Korea, Singapore, and Malaysia. I had been learned from those experiences that no matter what your culture are, no matter what your background is or no matter if we could communicate with each other or not; we all human beings, we are the same. And in medical field, all people should deserve the same treatment. .
From now on, I want to keep my step going further. I have been worked in hospital for two years; as a staff, I am responsible and effective. I have great time management skills, I am got along well with all my coworkers and I can be a great support all the time. I learned a lot and had a lot of hands-on practice experiences by working in the busiest unit in UK hospital; however, I realized that if I wanted to do more independent work or do more for my patients, there are lots of knowledge and skills to learn. I think I am good at any kinds of independent work, but I need to improve my critical thinking ability which definitely be improved by achieve a higher degree.
.UCLA family nurse practitioner program provide opportunity with student to practice in setting s that provide free or low cost health care upon graduation. Moreover, UCLA has been doing outreach to different countries and the contribution is significant. Based on these backgrounds of UCLA, I think UCLA family nurse practitioner program is the perfect program that able to help me be prepared for my future practice outside country.
Other than my nursing educational goals, I have a plan to learn French and Spinach when I go to graduate school. Since I know Chinese, Korean and Japanese, I have lots of advantages when I am taking care of patients who speak these languages. Based on my research, most of the countries that doctors without board going to are French-speaking or Spinach-speaking country, I think knowing the language can help me do therapeutic care and build therapeutic relationship with patients who speak different language.
As I said in my resume, I graduated from University of Kentucky BSN program with GPA 3.4.I was on dean’s list several times during my college year and all my nursing courses’ grade are above B level, even with English is my second language.. I was the only Asian female student in my class. There were nearly four hundred students applied for the BSN nursing program, however only one hundred and sixty students got admitted and only one hundred students graduated at the end. Luckily, I was one of them and I graduated on time finally. I am not the smartest student in my class, but I could say that I was the one working the hardest. Other than studying, I have done a lot of volunteer during my four year college life, I was a volunteer in UK hospital emergency room; I volunteer to went to elementary schools within Lexington area to do the visual screenings and to give free flu vaccines. Other than volunteer experience, I worked 20 hours every week since 2010 and I was the recipient of William C Parker scholarship and University of Kentucky medical center enhancement scholarship. As I said at the beginning, I went through my nursing school with English as my second language; I am also fluent in Chinese. I came to US alone when I was eighteen years old, so after I went through a lot by myself, I become independent, I have an extremely strong heart and I am also caring. In my mind, to be a nurse is a blessing thing. We use our knowledge to help others, but we also learn from others’ experience, I think that’s why I love nursing. . I am also believed that choose nursing, as my career is also a none-stop learning process; No matter in personally behalf or professionally behalf. In personally, I learned how strong that people could be from my patient, and sometime even when you are struggling with something, you still could be happy and enjoy the process.
Based on all my experience, I am confident to say that I am capable to join to graduate school and do well. I know that graduate school will be another challenge for me. However, I am always enjoying challenges, because it helps me grow up and even become a better person.
