Homer’s Odyssey is based on the life of a Trojan War soldier named Odysseus and how he returns to his home in Ithaca after being captured and imprisoned by Calypso. It explains how a man courageously escapes from imprisonment by using his knowledge and persevering.
Throughout the book, each character displays some bit of perseverance while having some rough obstacles but the most common signs of perseverance in this are right at the beginning of the book when Odysseus is stuck with Calypso. The signs of perseverance start as soon as the first page “But Odysseus, who longed to get back to his wife and reach his home, was being held in a hollow cave by that mighty nymph Calypso”. This quote is significant to the fact of Odysseus persevering because it starts the book off with a problem that needs to be solved. All his other warriors had returned safely home while Odysseus was all alone stuck with a goddess who wanted to be with him, so not only does Odysseus have to persevere for the sake of his family but he also needs to stay loyal to his wife just as she did for twenty years before he returned home.
