Emily Bronte was born in Thorton, Yorkshire, England, on July 30, 1818. Emily was the fifth child of Reverend Patrick Brontë and Maria Branwell Brontë. She experienced the death of three of her siblings and the death of her mother all at a very young age. With her sister Anne, Emily began to write her poems in her middle ages. She is best known for writing her book Wuthering Heights which was published in 1847.
Wuthering Heights was an imaginative work of passion and hate set on the Yorkshire moors. The novel was said to be separated from other novels of its time due to its dramatic and poetic presentation and its unusual structure. The novel is closely the opposite of Emily's being as she was known to be reserved and quiet. She avoided everyone that wasn’t family as the protagonist wanted everything to do with a family while Emily's family had slowly fell apart over the years. Emily’s writing style, themes, and techniques created quite the controversy. Critics spoke highly of the novel’s structure and disciplined use of language. Shortly after the publication of Wuthering Heights, Emily became ill very fast. She died in 19 Dec. 1848 of tuberculosis.
Emily was known as the “the sphinx of literature.” Very few people, with the exception of her immediate family and a few women friends, knew her. And even still, she remained a mystery. She preferred to limit contact with those who were not in her family. Emily never married and never had any children. Some say her writings offered a small peek into her life and personality. Most of what is known about Emily, comes from the writings of her own sister, Charlotte.
Emily Bronte is considered among the greatest of English novelist and poets. Although much of her early life was consumed by the death of her mother and two of her sisters and her education was non-existent or spotty at times, her love of reading and writing gave the world some of her best works in the forms of poems and letters. Although her only novel, Wuthering Heights, was surrounded by controversy and criticism by some, it was still viewed as a great piece of work and continues to be read, referenced and talked about in today.
