Gods play an important role in Homer’s epic the Odyssey. Almost all the gods are sympathetic to the main hero, Odysseus, except for Poseidon. Poseidon hates Odysseus because he has blinded his son Polyphemus.
In Book Nine, Odysseus docked his boat on modern-day Sicily and began to search it in hopes for food, but instead encountered a man-eating cyclops named Polyphemus. Polyphemus would go on to hold the men hostage for three days until Odysseus launched an attack on him.
After laying on the hot sand for hours, Polyphemus blindly got up with blood now slowly spilling out his eye socket. The frustration of not being able to see his surroundings really got him angry and he screamed “Odysseus!!” and started throwing things around. He accidentally threw some of his gold in the ocean.
Panicking, he yelled for his dad, Poseidon. The water went still as Poseidon arose from it. He came to the beautiful island and asked “what happened to your eye Polyphemus?” Polyphemus tried facing Poseidon and with a stern voice said “Odysseus cut my eye out with his men he needs to be killed now.
This act of violence had resulted in Poseidon creating an aggressive storm and becoming infuriated at Odysseus as seen in Book 9 where he states, “I wish I were as sure of ripping out your lungs and sending you to Hell”.
