Ever since I was young, I have shared my mother’s love and admiration for Audrey Hepburn. She was a popular actress, remembered primarily for her beauty and grace. However, she was much more than that. In World War II, when Hepburn was a teenager, her father became a Nazi sympathizer and left the family. Hepburn danced ballet in secrecy to raise money for the Dutch Resistance. When the war ended, she became a successful actress. She later left this career and was appointed Goodwill Ambassador of UNICEF, where she worked tirelessly to provide children around the world with food and fresh water. Though Hepburn spent years working as a humanitarian, she is most often remembered for her charm and elegance. Audrey Hepburn has been my role model because she persevered through her struggles and, upon growing successful, never forgot her roots. She continued to help others throughout her entire life and eventually left her successful acting career because she wanted to return to that. She was beautiful, but many refuse to see her as more than that. If I spent a day with Audrey Hepburn, I would want to know how she persevered through such difficult times, and how she managed to stay so humble. I would want to know everything that there was to know. There was so much more to Hepburn than a pretty face, and I feel that it’s time that people look past the glamorous image and embrace the humanitarian that she was.
