Achievements, Ambitions, and Service: Why I Am Applying for GEMS Scholarship

Dear Sir/Madam,

I am a motivated student of Grade 9 at Gems Modern Academy, Dubai and I am honoured to have this opportunity to apply for the GEMS Scholarship Program. I strongly believe I am a suitable candidate for the scholarship programme. Of course a committee will ask me 'why are you applying for this scholarship?' so that is why I write this application essay: to provide dear committee with example why I deserve it and why it is beneficial for me. 

Over the years, my parents have instilled in me a fiery passion to gain knowledge and an understanding of the importance of hard work, grit and determination. I have always taken my education very seriously and to that end, I have consistently been at the top of my grade. I have obtained excellent grades throughout my time in school, and I have also been the recipient of many awards. 

Apart from the academic achievements at school, I have also been placed in the top tier of several international examinations like ASSET, International Benchmark Test (IBT) and International Olympiads. I am placed in top percentile in the Cognitive Abilities Test (CAT4) with an overall score of 138. I have also received high distinction and outstanding performance in all subjects in the International Benchmark Test and ASSET respectively. I have a natural affinity towards numbers and this has helped me in achieving a meritorious performance in the National Abacus Competition and The National KENKEN Competition in UAE.

As a well rounded student, my interests span across several activities besides academics. Music and Speech & Drama are my special interests. I have achieved distinction and merit in the Trinity College London examinations for Choral Singing, Electronic Keyboard as well as Performance Arts in Production. I have also been a Winner of the Inter House Elocution Competition in both the Junior and Senior categories at GMA.

I have always believed that our work should not end at striving towards personal goals and indeed it should extend to our community and the world around us. With this deeper realization I been active and made whatever contribution I could to my community as a whole. I have regularly volunteered to contribute my efforts towards social causes. This summer, I volunteered to assist in a Children’s hospital in India, where I visited the patients, read to them and sometimes just provided a willing ear.

I often ask myself: where do you see yourself in 10 years? With a help of this scholarship I will be able to make my career dreams come true as in the future, I hope to pursue my dream of becoming a neurologist. I have always wanted to be a doctor and I am inspired by my aunt, who is a renowned gynecologist in India. I have personally witnessed her relentlessly attending to her patients with the same degree of empathy and patience all the time. I understand that the medical field is challenging; however, I believe it to be a highly noble profession. I feel that I will have no problem rising to this challenge. I aspire to do my medical education in one of the top medical colleges, either in the UK or in India. Being a GEMS Scholar will certainly go a long way to boost my credentials while applying to top universities and it will greatly help me in my pursuits and goals.

This scholarship represents to me an opportunity to fully focus my attention on the main objective of achieving the best I can in the 10th Grade ICSE exams and beyond. If selected for this scholarship, I will continue to apply the same diligence to my school studies as I have to this point, making education and service to others my top priority. Being awarded the GEMS Scholarship would be an incredible opportunity for me and one I intend to seize wholeheartedly without reservation.

I have consistently proven throughout my school years that when presented with an opportunity I will strive as hard as I can to best represent myself and those who have granted me a chance to prove such. With the same zeal, I will strive to be a representative and a good ambassador of GEMS Education in general and Gems Modern Academy in particular, during my years in school and beyond.
