I am highly enthusiastic about applying for the Social Work Program at Fordham University’s Graduate School of Social Services. Through this Fordham supplemental essay I am be able to delve deeper into my personal experience and aspirations in social work, providing a comprehensive picture of my suitability for the university's academic community.
I strongly believe that the program is a significant step on my journey to becoming an advocate of mental health for the disadvantaged and marginalized populations. A wise person once told me that if you choose a job that you are passionate about, you will never have to work a day in your life and opportunity lies in the middle of difficulty. I have carried these words close to my heart throughout my life as I seek to find my life’s true purpose. Every individual deserves a good quality of life and all their fundamental needs should be met. Nonetheless, my personal and professional experiences have exposed me to various challenges that stand in the way of vulnerable populations. In that regard, social work provides me with the opportunity to make an impact in the lives of the most vulnerable populations in society by protecting them from harm, utilizing a holistic, individual-centered technique to help them build meaningful lives, and uphold their rights. I chose Fordham University not only because of its outstanding reputation but also because of its richness in diversity and the degree of satisfaction acquired by students after enrolling at the University. The opportunity to study at the university will help me amass the skills necessary to work with people and make a difference in the world.
My wish to work in a field that involves helping and taking care of vulnerable members of society is partly influenced by significant events in my personal life. My motivation to focus on mental health sterns from having grown up with a brother suffering from learning difficulties and dyslexia. Initially, I found what I learned in school to be insufficient. Consequently, I took it upon myself to undertake research into child development, as well as the types of social assistance services available to children. Further experiences in my life increased my appetite to do more for the kids who were in a similar situation as my brother or faced worse. Even so, it is crucial to point out the fact that my motivation to pursue social work is not solely personal. The theoretical foundations of social work provide me with intellectual fulfillment. As such, I find my exposure to higher education to be significantly rewarding. In particular, studying psychology has been extremely stimulating. Learning about methods of research in sociology and going through the history of the Victorian Era as far as the origins of social welfare is concerned has been enjoyable.
Additionally, keeping up with current issues related to the field of social work through various forms of media is crucial to me. Given that I possess an open mind regarding different opinions, I expect to participate in lively debates and discussions organized by the university. Also, I plan to take full advantage of the resources provided by Fordham University to explore topics ranging from child protection, mental health drugs, and the role played by communication in social work. In addition, the experience I have gained from volunteering is considerable. Currently, I am involved in a parent partnership program. The program is focused on assisting parents and caregivers of children with special needs in learning and providing links with other agencies that support children with special educational needs. The experience has instilled in me the value of cooperation and organization. Furthermore, it has shown me what it takes to be a leader. My understanding and knowledge of social work have been enhanced by coming into contact with varicose professionals in the field.
Previous working experiences have honed in me crucial skills that make me suitable for the social work course. Particularly, working as a sales manager demanded me to exercise perseverance, be diplomatic in the event of a conflict, and be comfortable working under pressure . All these are assets which I can put to greater use at the university when working with groups or engaging in academic discussions. A competent social worker possesses skills such as empathy, compassion, patience, and insight. One must also have the ability to assess each case independently. It would be wrong to assume that each case is similar. Each case is unique; thus, one must have the ability to critically analyze the past in order to promote growth and improve the future. Furthermore, I possess active listening and communication skills. Combining my level of maturity, discipline, and determination will pave the way for me to become an all-rounded student. As such, I have no doubt that there will be no problems balancing my personal life and school life.
As a matter of fact, a significant proportion of my time will be dedicated to the program. My only other responsibility will be my part-time job, whose schedule is quite flexible, allowing me to work only when I have no engagement at school while the rest of the time can be compensated during the weekend. Essentially, I shall be able to focus on every task when required, be it the lessons, discussions or filed placements. Other than that, I possess a wide range of hobbies and interests. Reading, traveling and being involved in sporting activities form a major of my daily routine. However, my favorite way to pass the time is volunteering. As such, I would gladly make my contribution to the university by being involved in extra-curricular activities organized by the university as far as volunteering is concerned. My aim is to be actively integrated into the university community for me to gather substantial knowledge.
Fordham University’s Graduate School of Social Services mission of producing social workers who will not only be the catalysts for significant and lasting transformation in the field of social work but also become leaders and scholars deeply resonates with personal and professional ambition. I am confident that my passion and drive will make me a valuable asset to the university. At the same time , the experience will better prepare me to take up the challenge of improving the community and eventually make a significant impact as far as child development and mental health is concerned. I sincerely hope that the above statements clearly illustrate my abilities and valuable input. I am more than motivated and committed to the study and my vision of what needs to be done to improve social work. My experience , coupled with a work ethic , exemplary personality , and the desire to pursue a career that involves helping those in need, is a clear indication that I possess the potential to make a difference in the study and field of social work. I eagerly look forward to presenting my interests and aspirations to the admissions committee at Fordham University and exploring the development opportunities the university has to offer.
