A woman in heels click-clacks through the parking lot, walks up three steps, and pauses as a young man with short curly hair and an inviting smile opens the door to the building. An old man, grandfather to many, hobbles into the building from his parking spot near the entrance. In the meeting room, a single voice rings out, “I sing because I’m happy…” Suddenly, all talking ceases, and people stand, lifting their hands in worship. The tangible energy of the Holy Spirit circulates the sanctuary, uniting a diverse group of individuals into a strong body of believers, thinkers, and doers. Standing among the crowd, I know that the environment created at my church can influence the world well beyond these walls, and I aspire to duplicate this everywhere I go.
As a young Christian, I am aware of the importance of working in an environment of belief and empowerment. Pepperdine offers a multitude of opportunities to connect with Christians through small groups, recreational events, and student-led ministries, fellowships I will undoubtedly take part in at the university. I believe, however, God call us not only to associate with those who have already found Him, but to introduce others to a relationship with God. Through the encouraging atmosphere that Pepperdine students and staff create, I hope to bring students eager for knowledge to Christ and help them to honor Him in every aspect of life: scholarship, leadership, careers, and community service.
Christians often shy away from scientific fields because they deem science and religion incompatible, but I believe God uses everything to bring him glory. Science does not refute God, but confirms God’s unvarying principles and creative wonder. With this approach, I intend to encourage more Christians to pursue scientific careers and to promote the search for truth in science. Through Pepperdine’s Summer Undergraduate Research in Biology Program and other opportunities for research in my first years of college, I wish to bridge the gap between science and religious by providing scientific discovery in a context of Christian values. I also plan to join some of the many pre-health and pre-medicine clubs at Pepperdine to strengthen relations between pre-health students and gain greater understanding of the medical school application process.
Jesus encouraged his followers to love and help one another, and through the multitude of community service opportunities at Pepperdine, I aim to provide support and aid to communities both local and distant. As a pre-medicine student, I may volunteer at local hospitals, assisting medical staff and giving care to disabled people. Through university-wide outreach programs—like Step Forward Day—I will contribute to an event that truly impacts the community. Additionally, Pepperdine’s Project Serve will allow me to transform the world by serving those in need domestically and internationally.
Proverbs 16:3 encourages us to “commit your work to the Lord, and your plans will be established.” By trusting God and pairing with such a supportive university as Pepperdine, I will not only bring converts to salvation but empower disciples to do His will.
