'A man will make more opportunities than he finds'. My grandfather has made me live by this quote from the very moment I stepped foot into the halls of high school. Growing through the years of high school, I became my person, not socially but academically. Starting my Junior year, I set a goal of continuing the Dual Enrollment program to begin my college credits. My plan changed during the middle of the year when I recognized that I had plenty of credits; I took the opportunity to graduate with the class of 2021 instead of 2022. I applied to colleges in Florida and was accepted to Florida Gulf Coast University at the age of 16, along with graduating early. Although Florida Gulf Coast University taught me leadership and academic values, the environment seemed to not click with me. From the feeling of no connection on campus, I had a desire to transfer to Boston College for the opportunity of having challenging academics within the Carol School of Management, no Greek Life, and a Catholic-based community. Within (BC) Boston College supplemental essay though analysis of my academic experience I explain why I am looking for a possibility to be transferred exactly to this college.
On August 19, 2021, I began a new academic and societal journey at Florida Gulf Coast University. As soon as my days began, I signed up for the clubs that interested me and could improve my well-being. The club that changed me the most was the Emerging Eagles club. This club taught me ways of becoming a successful and constructive leader in the college scene, through self-discovery and empowerment. I became aware of what I can do for the University and how to apply others to be their best. I signed up to be an Emerging Eagles counselor and was able to identify that characteristic from my classmates and professors was to improve their knowledge of society. But once the semester continued, Greek-Life and “party people” became apparent on campus. I felt less connected to the University since I did not want to partake in the provided activities hosted by Greek Life or other students. As Greek Life was dominant in the community, it was hard to avoid it because the campus is in an area away from any city or town. Once it became difficult to connect with many students of the University, I pondered transferring to find the correct fit.
Looking through many college options, I found Boston College to be the ideal collegiate. A chance to be with a school that shapes its principle on the same practices makes me feel connections to the college that I did not experience with Florida Gulf Coast University. Along with the Jesuit values, Boston College has no Greek Life. When having no Greek Life, I sensed I would be more connected with the students since I would not feel the necessity to connect with Greek Life and have no distraction that it can bring on campus. Another interest of mine was the Carol School of Management. The school transforms students into becoming successful in their fields while having a base of Catholic education. The school has a characteristic strenuous to find in Universities, especially in Florida, and I feel that having that base will improve my academic attributes.
Through my experiences at the Florida Gulf Coast University, I found that being a leader sometimes must place themselves above their team to succeed. So, with this possibility to transfer, I took control of my situation and begin a new educational journey despite how it may affect my family and friends. From the words of my grandfather, this is an opportunity that I can create and used to improve my future.
