Dear National Honor Society Selection Committee,
I am writing to apply for membership in the National Honor Society (NHS) as I believe that my dedication to academic excellence, leadership skills, service-oriented mindset, and commitment to personal growth align perfectly with the values and goals of this esteemed organization. This NHS application consists of few parts: my academic backgroud, studies interests, a desire to become a part of National Honor Society and future plans.
Scientist James Lovelock once said, “Nuclear fission is a naturally occurring process of life.” I have always found nuclear science intriguing. The idea of using science to build and work with the principles of nuclear physics has been an interest of mine. Over the past years, I have explored schools, industries, and career paths about nuclear engineering. I found that nuclear engineering brings my passion for science and building into an occupation. My past experiences and goals have shaped my occupational interest and has made me want to pursue the nuclear engineering career field.
Getting ready for high school my teachers would often ask “have any ideas?” They were talking about occupations. I would always respond with “police officer” or “I will join the military.” When I started high school, I enrolled in a career management class. The final project for the class was to research an occupation that was in our interest. I had no idea what I wanted to become. The teacher linked me to a website that gathered my skills, interest, hobbies, and personal traits. It gave me a list of occupations that best suited me. I had been suggested a job that caught my eye, the bold letters spelled “nuclear engineering.”
Last year my counselor told me about a program at Brunswick Community College (BCC). After looking into the program and the career paths they provide, I chose that after finishing school I will looking for opportunities to study at this college. My counselor has supported me in this decision.
Talking to my career coach I was told that if I take dual enrollment and advanced placement courses, I will have high chances of getting into NC State. I plan on running for the National Honor Society president to add experience to on my resume. I also plan on getting the recommended ACT scores for NC State. The average ACT scores accepted is around 26-31 (“Undergraduate Admissions”). To prepare myself, I have taken an ACT preparation class to build experience and strategies to achieve my desired score.
The position I am most interested in is becoming a nuclear engineer. Like the construction engineers, a nuclear engineer will work in a specific construction project of a new nuclear power plant. A nuclear engineer can also supervise the operation of nuclear facilities. One of the main jobs a nuclear engineer will have is designing production reactors, power reactors, and the new methods of assessing reactor risk. They may also design equipment that makes use of radioactive material. I am currently looking into a nuclear engineering occupation that will allow me to work at a nuclear facility.
Leadership is another area of my interest. It has been an integral part of my high school experience. I have served as the president of our school's community service club, where I have led and organized various initiatives to benefit our local community. From food drives to volunteering at local shelters, these experiences have taught me the value of empathy, compassion, and making a positive impact on others' lives. Additionally, I have had the privilege of representing our school in regional debate competitions, where I have honed my public speaking skills and demonstrated the ability to think critically and present persuasive arguments.
Service has always held a special place in my heart, and I have actively sought opportunities to give back to my community. Beyond the organized initiatives, I have engaged in individual acts of kindness, such as tutoring fellow students in subjects where they struggle. Seeing the positive impact I can have on others' lives through these small gestures has been incredibly rewarding and has further fueled my commitment to serving others.
Being part of the National Honor Society would not only be a recognition of my past achievements but also a commitment to further contribute to my school and community. I am eager to collaborate with like-minded individuals who share my dedication to scholarship, leadership, service, and personal development. I look forward to engaging in meaningful projects that positively impact the lives of others and inspire fellow students to reach their full potential.
In conclusion, I believe that my academic achievements, leadership experiences, service-oriented mindset, and commitment to personal growth make me a strong candidate for membership in the National Honor Society. I am confident that my values align closely with the principles upheld by this esteemed organization, and I am eager to contribute to the NHS community. Thank you for considering my application.
