Due to the interest of Business that I have when I finished high school, I took Maths, Economics & Business Studies in A Levels to assist me in exploring the areas of each subjects more. Maths has helped me with the critical thinking that it involves and learning more about how to use this knowledge to work out the best arrangement or contract. I had chosen Economics to give me a broad idea of how the economy works, understanding the demand and supply of a service, how to adjust to changing conditions and make better choices when it comes to it. Furthermore, having had Business Studies had allowed me to participate in a programme called Brunei Entrepreneurship Education Scheme (BEES) where we were tasked to start a new small medium enterprise (SME) with our own approach of collecting capital from prospective shareholders, come up with a creative service and make a profit at the end of it. All the shareholders that had invested in our company had made a 200% return on their investment.
During my time during this programme, I was elected as Managing Director for our company, Stung by BEES and was asked to give a small presentation regarding how the service worked. With this and along many other presentations, I was able to learn to interact more as a team player as my team was very helpful, gave me tips & criticism on what would be interesting & how to get to the concise points in a slideshow. I also learned about the Rule of 6 in which a presenter shouldn’t include more than 6 bullet points in a slide and not more than 6 words in each line. A good way to keep it short and sweet.
One of my most memorable memories while I was in high school was being part of the Police Cadet troupe as it has taught me how to be disciplined, to hold a high standard & and not allowing anything to fall beneath set standard. When I was promoted to squad leader, having such a responsibility and duty to lead my team has educated me/ granted me the knowledge of authority, management of both personal & professional relationships.
The lessons I’ve learnt from my schooling years will just be the tip of the iceberg of lessons I would come to learn during the course and further down into my career as possibly a manager or a consultant. I’m looking forward to learning about the different strategies to choosing the right ways to construct a business plan, a proposal & use these skills to assist me in possibly starting out with an e-commerce (rather than just a physical shop) & eventually branch out to having a physical shop.
Today we live in a dynamic economic and social climate, where business remains crucial to how we live our lives. Business studies is of growing importance in our society as we transition into a very different political and business world upon the Brexit decision. As someone who has a deep interest in the role of business and the impact it has on people, I firmly believe studying Business at undergraduate level in a top UK university would give me the best foundation for building my career in the Human Resources field.
Having studied Business at A level I have developed my creative and analytical thinking which has allowed me to excel at the subject. With a strong grasp in mathematics and an aptitude for extended essay writing. This has given me an excellent grounding in the core skills needed for studying Business at Undergraduate level. Along with studying Business at A level, studying Sociology has given me the opportunity to develop my interest in the studies of human behaviour and the different global societies. One of my passions in life is for people; I believe that humans are the ultimate resource and that effective management of employees can allow a firm to reach its full potential. I have always aimed to gain experience working with people in whatever I do. During my time studying I was involved in my colleges peer support programme where I was able to support and motivate my fellow peers in and outside of the classroom.
Taking time away from my studies this year has given me the opportunity to gain valuable life and work experience. I have used this time to focus on building fundamental skills and observing how businesses operate in the real world. During this time I worked for the successful brand Admiral I have been able to further my organisational and communication skills. I have also learnt the importance of professionalism in work and the day-to-day pressures of deadlines. This has heightened my interest in studying business as I am keen to further understand the management skills needed for a successful business. I have spent time working in different roles in the business and have been involved in a trial for promoting the online digital workforce and social media.
I have also had the opportunity of completing work experience in an innovative start-up business for financial technology, ANNA Money. This has allowed me understand the challenges businesses face during the first few years of operating and has also given me the chance to gain exposure to different markets.
Personally I feel this experience has allowed me to mature and really put into perspective what I want to achieve in my career. I aspire to push past the entry level role and feel that studying Business will help me reach my goals. I feel this will benefit my studies as I have gained insight into the importance of effective, motivating management and a strong workforce.
Outside of work and study I enjoy dance and regularly attend my local dance classes which I have coached in for GCSE classes and helped lead dance theory sessions. I have been a part of numerous productions with the class, and have previously been involved in the choreography as well as planning of our productions.
