Life's journey is a labyrinth, shaped by unpredictable twists and turns. Our actions, whether subtle or profound, script our unique narratives. This essay delves into personal philosophy and self-discovery, akin to the wisdom of Socrates.
It highlights the significance of family, the pressures of academia, and the pervasive habit of comparing one's life with others. Envy distorts our perception, blinding us to the fact that every life we observe is but a chapter in a greater story.
Experience emerges as the greatest teacher, shaping character and enriching our memories. Socrates' timeless wisdom to "Know thyself" encourages self-discovery amid life's trials and tribulations. Hardships and failures are not defeats but stepping stones to wisdom.
The essay narrates a personal journey marked by adversity, despair, and ultimate self-realization. The author's courageous battle reflects a spirit akin to Socrates' call to "look at oneself." Self-awareness becomes a powerful shield against external judgments.
Life is how we go about day by day, month by month, year by year. Our actions, even the slightest, can twist and turn our paths like a labyrinth. Life is quite unpredictable, though it is what we make of it. Whatever happens in life happens for a reason, be it the good or the bad.
My family and my friends are the ones I value highly. School is very important to me, but sometimes it keeps me so preoccupied that my life outside of school slips my mind. I tend to overwork myself, and too much stress is not ideal. I encounter dead ends in my life, but I manage to get back on the right path. More often than not, I have mulled over past events and considered the current place I’m at in my life, viewing everything in a harsh light. If I were asked to describe my life in just one word, I would say that it’s a rut. I admit to comparing my life to the lives of others, but this feeling of envy is destructive. Each and every life has a story, but we might not realize that what we take note of is only a certain chapter of that story. What people usually share is the best aspects of their lives, the ones where they look good. Because who would readily open up about their struggles? The “perfect life” is just a myth. The point is that one must own their life and find aspects to take for granted.
I believe that experience is everything. What we see, what we learn, what we do shapes us all. The lives we live we should make the best out of—”Live today as if it was your last.” The very experiences we give rise to are all crucial to our memories, which we hold onto for the rest of our lives. We should do whatever makes us happy, provide a helping hand in our community, and aim to make a difference even if we think of any mark we leave to be of negligible impact. The key points holding us back from stepping out of our comfort zone are that we’re afraid of failing, we doubt ourselves, and we tend to give up. The humility which we feel as a result of failures makes us capable of understanding what we did wrong and places value on that past experience in the long-run. The fact of the matter is that one cannot succeed without having experienced failure. Also, taking chances doesn’t always hurt. The outcome might surprise us. Our experiences make each and every one of us unique and enables us to tell stories and connect with others, forming bonds which we’ll come to cherish. Therefore, the opportunities life tosses at us, we shall take.
This topic is all about my philosophy in life together with the understanding of the philosopher named Socrates. Before I start to tell something of Socrates’s philosophy and his belief, I would like to share to you the ups and downs of my life and all the hardships that I have encountered.
I am just a simple human who had a dream to become a famous chef in the world. That dream went down when I was 17 years old. I have experience a lot of problems like financial, family, and emotional problems. I attempted suicide when I was 18, that day, October 24, 2017, I was in a very hard situation where I can’t even understand myself and my family anymore which I attempted to kill myself using a 4 meter rope. I was so hopeless that time. To avoid the negative thoughts that’s running through my mind, I seek jobs so that I can earn and help my family and also myself even in a little way. Suddenly, all of the company that I tried to apply rejected my resume because I didn’t finish High School.
As the time passes by, I just realize that life isn’t all about happiness. Life itself is also consist of negative and positive, problems and solutions, easy and hard, complicated and relax and so on. Life for me is not easy to understand, but now, I believe that life wouldn’t be complete without challenges. Until I encountered this topic in philosophy class where I know the philosopher named Socrates. In the writings, he said, “Know thyself” which gives me courage to know more about myself. Because of him, I am starting to know what are my purposes in life. Knowing yourself is the best shield you ever had, why? because no matter what the people in your surroundings tells about you, you won’t be affected because, you are the only one who knows yourself more perfectly and nothing else.
“Man has to look at himself”, one of Socrate’s lines. This line means, know yourself and conquer it because you are the one who has an idea of yourself, you are the one who knows yourself, and most of all, you are the one who can control yourself including your attitude and decisions. Therefore, don’t waste your time by knowing yourself and spending time for yourself, in that way, you may have the full knowledge on how to act for yourself, decide for yourself, and do everything you want for yourself as long as it is right.
Before I end this little summary of my life and my little understanding of Socrates, I am happy to share to you my experiences and I feel relieved because after a long time, I finally had the chance to let my feelings and my hurtful experiences out. I am also happy that I read some of Socrates philosophy and I am honored to be inspired by his sayings that made my negative thoughts disappeared.
