A Personal Account of The Desire to Purse Self-employment

Everyone in life has a dream and would want the dream to come true someday. It feels good for one to do what they are passionate about. People have different personalities and thus what one cares about is different from another person. Personally, I care about running my business in future. I believe I can achieve the idea of becoming self-sufficient by engaging businesses and getting inspirations from successful people. Almost every person dreams of starting their own business. Many people get into the business because of several reasons. Some want to be happy in life, to others it is passion, to be rich, promote an idea, achieve dreams, take advantage of an opportunity, and create a unique product or for financial freedom (Ramsinghani, 2011).

When I was young, the teachers had a tendency of asking us what we would like to be when we grow up. We all had dreams and ambitions. One could say I would like to be a teacher, doctor, nurse, police officer among others. Interestingly, most of us had dreams of becoming pilots.

I remember I had many business ideas in my mind. Many of my friends often told me I always came up with superb ideas as far as business is concerned. My friends’ compliments motivated me to rediscover what I cared about. I realized that I could do better in the area of business, and that was where my talent was nurtured. I gained a lot of concern in the field of business. I remember that one of my professors told be to put my ideas into practice.

Lots and lots of people inspired me to enter the field of business. My inspiration started from home just as the saying that charity begins at home. My mother, being a business lady dealing with a small business motivated me. I came from a humble background. If it were not for the business that my mother ran, we could not have made all our ends meet. My mother was very hard working and from her I learned that business can help people run their lives. I was obsessed with reading quotes of some of the successful people in the area of business. Melinda Gates states that if one is successful, it is because somewhere, sometime, someone gave one an idea that started you in a particular direction. She also said that one should also help the less fortunate just as one helped you to become successful (Gregory, 2013).

Since I was young, my life was centered on reading. I liked reading magazines that talked about entrepreneurship. There was a story I read about this young man who was eighteen years old and was very rich. The young man came from a poor background and could thus he did not have access to education. The man came up with an idea of growing vegetables. At the start, his business was challenging but he did not give up. Years and years went by, and he could produce many vegetables. One day, he got an order of supplying all the nearby supermarkets with vegetables. From there, his life took a turning point, and he immediately rose from rags to riches. The story helped me to discover that hard work pays and in everything we do, despite the challenges, we should never give up. I started gaining insights of how to start my own business.

There was a friend of mine who finished her university education and was employed in a firm where she worked as an accountant. She was paid well but did not enjoy her job only because her interest did not lie there. I realized that life is not all about making money. It is about doing what you love most and nurturing it so as to get money. That’s when my ideas of starting my own business came in because I had seen many people prosper in the area business starting with my mother.

I finally started a small business while still at the university after having gotten ideas from people and after having read many articles and manuals that were related to business. I even conducted research on the social networks to know the benefits of venturing into business. I loved business because of financial freedom. It helped me overcome all the financial limitations. The small business I started enabled me expand and gain the potential to start different kinds of business. Business helped me achieve and live to my dreams. Research has shown that many people venture in areas where they have passion. Again, with the business, I had independence and freedom. I was the one deciding on how the things pertaining my business were supposed to be done. That’s the good thing about business.

I borrowed what I learned in the class to my own business, and that was among the reasons I succeeded in business. Being my boss meant that I was the one to make decisions concerning my business. I was the one who decided about my marketing strategies and pricing. Venturing into business gave me job security because no one could fire me since I was self-employed. No one dictated how I should operate my business.

I came to realize that even doing what you love most has challenges. It was the challenges that kept me moving. The greatest challenge I experienced lay in the field of competition. Since I owned a cyber café, many people in the locality held cyber cafes. To overcome competition, I had to lower the surfing rates so as to attract more customers. This marketing strategy helped me in getting customers’ which made me excel in the area I cared for. The issue of stiff competition did not make me give up carrying on with my business. It motivated me to work harder than before. I always worked with a slogan that said that I would never wake up in the same place as I was yesterday. This slogan helped me in working towards becoming rich. People helped me towards recognizing my dream. I believed that if people helped me towards becoming successful, why should I not always help others to become successful like me?

I would advise people not to spend a lot of time searching careers or jobs that are paying well. They should focus on their passion because one can get a better paying job and be not happy. Doing what you care most is the most important thing. The most successful people in the world focused on the areas where they had passion in. It is the passion that leads to prosperity. Business was my passion and through it I am self-reliant. I do not depend on my parents. I can raise my school fees through self-employment.
