I commit to the work I perform because I want to see my ideas and imaginations become visual and tangible creations for everyone to appreciate. I want to be able to express my own personal feelings with my work that I can't share with just words. My aspiration in the next few years is to become a graphic designer. I would prefer to do this on a global scale and with so many language barriers in place using images and graphics is sometimes the only way to communicate. Bringing everyone together and making the world culturally aware is my lifetime goal.
I try to have a grand Master plan with my pieces, however majority of the time I have to plan as I go. I'm a really organized person and a bit of a perfectionist so mistakes are a serious nagging inconvenience for me whether someone else notices it or not. Small details are what really sets up a piece and I love using block printing to create such details. A theme that I like to add to my pieces is usually something visually related to women anatomy or conceptual themes of freedom or misguidance. I'm a feminist so these themes are easy to relate to and express.
When I work with block printing I am constantly reminded that each mistake is permanent, however each mistake will also add character and uniqueness to my pieces. This is my third time working with block printing and I hoped that this time I could explore a stronger visage profile based piece and incorporate curls again. I usually initiate a piece by trying to target subjects and topics that I am interested in. However, "Two-Sided Happiness" was inspired by my colleague's pearl necklace. As I gazed upon her clustered pearl necklace I envisioned bubbles floating about and as I listened to her enthusiastically speak, I thought about everything that she values: happiness, excitement, joy, fun, and of course freedom. I put two and two together and mentally framed "Two-Sided Happiness". I know my work is done when I feel I can no longer add anymore textures or shapes and maintain a balance of aesthetics. "Two-Sided Happiness" definitely reached that point. When my piece is going as planned, I feel a sense of pride and ambition. I feel as if I can accomplish any task placed in front of me. When others view my piece I hope that they will feel jovial and free and ponder on what gives them these emotions.
